Sorry that I haven’t posted much of late. With the fury that was Hurricane Irene , and the lack of Mets related news , I decided to take a few days off.
I was at yesterday’s doubleheader between the Mets and Marlins, and all I can say was what a day it was ! I was able to get Mookie Wilson’s autograph in my 25th anniversary Mets book written by Dennis Honig back in ’86. It features autographs of Duke Snider, Tommie Agee, Kevin Mitchell, Mel Stottlemyre, Greg Pavlick – and yes George Foster.
I saw both R.A Dickey and Dillon Gee reach deep down inside to pitch two of the gutsiest games of the season. I saw Jose Reyes make his eagerly awaited return from his latest hamstring strain. And I saw Bobby Parnell quite possibly come into his own as a closer ( we will see !)
So now enjoy some pictures taken by my wife Jeanne .
And with that said….. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!
Mets alumni celebrating a birthday today includes :
Legendary Mets closer, Tug McGraw would have been 67 today (1944). With his broad, beaming smile, off-kilter personality and positive attitude, Tug has endeared himself as a Mets legend – and his presence is sorely missed !
Middle reliever from the ’07 season, Jon Adkins is 34 (1977). Adkins is better known as one of the two players ( Ben Johnson was the other)that we got in return in the ill advised trade that sent Heath Bell and Royce Ring to the San Diego Padres.
The New York Mets sold the contract of relief pitcher, Dale Murray to the Montreal Expos on August 30, 1979. Murray spent 2 season with the Mets, appearing in a total of 111 games, and had a record of 12-13 with an E.R.A of 4.27 and 9 saves.
The New York Mets traded middle relievers, Kevin Brown and Julio Machado to the Milwaukee Brewers for back up catcher, Charlie O’Brien and minor leaguer, Kevin Carmody on August 30, 1990.
The Montreal Expos claimed back up catcher, Orlando Mercado of the New York Mets on waivers on August 30, 1990.
The New York Mets traded minor league first baseman, Nikco Riesgo and minor league pitcher, Rocky Elli to the Philadelphia Phillies for a past his prime Tom Herr on August 30, 1990. Herr was better known as a Mets killer during his days as a St Louis Cardinal played a season and a half with the Mets, and batted a combined .216with 2 homers and 24 RBIs.
The New York Mets traded minor league pitcher, Archie Corbin to the Kansas City Royals for reserve outfielder, Pat Tabler on August 30, 1990. By the time the Mets obtained Tabler, he was on the downside of his career. In 17 games with the Mets he batted .279 with 1 homer and 10 RBIs.
The New York Mets traded middle reliever, Nelson Cruz to the Oakland Athletics for utility infielder, Jorge Velandia on August 30, 2000.
The New York Mets traded reserve outfielder, Victor Diaz to the Texas Rangers forthird string catcher ( and currently on the Mets roster), Mike Nickeas on August 30, 2006.
Mo Vaughn was a true hero during Hurricane Irene. He let was used as a flotation device to rescue trapped homeowners in Staten Island !

I enjoyed those 2 games yesterday as well, but didn’t have the pleasure of being out at Citi. Beautiful day/night for a double header though.
I see your wife caught that McKeon argument on the field. I was watching thinking ‘is he ever going to give it up?’. Honestly, I couldn’t believe that ump was allowing him to go on and on. And hey, maybe if Sanchez didn’t do such a poor job of getting over to 1st – as in straddling the bag instead of just touching it, Thole would have been called out by a good margin.
I’d like nothing better than to win all 5 from the Marlins. Don’t have anything big hate for that ball club (like I surely do for the Phillies), but as with many Met fans, they’ve annoyed me since the last series of 2007.
