This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty: The ” Mets Meet The Tuesday’s Children” Edition 09-05-11

I apologize that I haven’t been around the past few days, I have been at a undisclosed location that lacked a proper Internet connection !

This past Thursday I was given the honor by the Mets to cover a meet and greet between New York Mets players and the children whose parents had perished on 9/11.

This was in conjunction with the Tuesday’s Children fund, a not for profit organization that was started in the weeks after these attacks. Tuesday’s Children and the Mets have been organizing these meet and greets since 2002.

If you would like to send a donation to the fund please click here

Below is some video and pictures that I had taken during the event.

Chris Capuano

Nick Evans

Lucas Duda

R.A Dickey

Bobby Parnell

And with that said… HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!

Mets alumni celebrating a birthday today include:

The second pitching coach in Mets history, Ernie White, would have been 95 today (1916) .

Reserve outfielder from ’84-’85, John Christensen is 51 (1960) . He would be part of the trade which would see pitchers , Calvin Schiraldi and Wes Gardner, along with minor league outfield prospect LaShelle Tarver dealt tot he Boston Red Sox for pitcher Bobby Ojeda.

Full time catcher from last years team ( at least until Josh Thole was promoted from AAA), Rod Barajas is 36 (1975). He was one of the better power hitting catchers that the Mets have employed since Mike Piazza left.

Reserve outfielder from the ’03 season, Matt Watson is 35 (1978).

The New York Mets signed free agent outfielder, Ron Swoboda on September 5, 1963. Although he was given the nickname ” Rocky” to describe his defensive skills, he quite possibly made one of the most iconic catches in baseball history !

Mo Vaughn will be rocking out to the Todd Rundgren classic ” I Don’t Wanna Work ( I Just Wanna Band On The Drum All Day” !

Enjoy your Labor Day everyone !!

Very nice, Rusty.  Thanks for the behind the scenes ‘reporting’ on an item the Mets have done well this season.
