This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty: The ” Terry Collins Post Game Press Conference 09-01-11″ Edition 09-06-11

Lets face it, last nights game against the Marlins was unwatchable.

So here is footage from Terry Collins post game press conference that I had video taped from last Thursdays win against the Marlins. Terry talks about the injuries to Josh Thole and Ruben Tejada, as well as his opinion if Miguel Bautista  will pitch in this Thursdays doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves.

Watch for the f-bomb towards the end of the video – it’s hilarious ! Oh and I am sorry about the shakiness of the footage – I’m still trying to get a hand of this thingamajig !

And with that said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!

Mets alumni celebrating a birthday today includes:

Mets Sports Channel, MSG & WPIX play by play broadcaster, Fran Healy is 65 (1946). I was never a fan of Healy’s broadcasting skills. I never liked announcers that were “homers”, and Healy was the epitome of a homer announcer.

Reserve outfielder from the ’01 season, Alex Escobar is 33 (1978). While Escobar was playing in the Mets farm system, he was hyped by the front office as a “5 tool ” player. Well I guess most of his tools were defective because he would be traded after the ’01 season to the Cleveland Indians for future Hall of Famer, Roberto Alomar and middle reliever, Mike Bacsik

The New York Mets purchased the contract of middle reliever, Larry Foss from the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 6, 1962. Foss would only appear in 5 games with the Mets, and went 0-1 with an E.R.A of 4.63.

The New York Mets signed free agent infielder, Keith Miller on September 6, 1984. In 1991, Keith would be part of the deal which sent him to the Kansas City Royals for one time Cy Young award winner, Brett Saberhagen.

Mo Vaughn was in Miami last night to watch the Mets/Marlins game. No wonder why we were destroyed by a last place team !!!

I usually stick around after the game for the post game interviews – minimum to hear what TC has to say.  I remember this one.  Poor Terry was pretty exasperated.

I didn’t know they allowed bloggers to attend the post game interviews..  Very cool.

it was our first time.  was an interesting experience.

I’m really liking these uniforms, too bad they can’t replace roll them out until 2013. Or maybe that would be a great time too, with those “New Look Mets”.

Question to Ruben on his weekly chat:

    Any credence to
the rumor the FO has had discussions with going into a complete
rebuilding mode for 2012 – instead of a few tweaks and trying to sell
the fans on ‘we’ve got enough to compete’?
    Adam Rubin  (12:13 PM)

    What
exactly are they doing right now? They can call it what they want. But
biding time until the next wave of prospects is rebuiling, no?
    ***********************

    I’d have to say no.
To me a complete rebuilding mode is you trade any talent you do have for good young pieces and/or very good prospects for the future.  This would include not resigning Reyes, trading Wright for instances.

    1. SaltyGary

I would have to respectfully disagree. When you are in NY you can have a higher transitional payroll then say a Houston or Oakland team. They can completely rebuild and keep Wright. He is the face and does not have a bloated contract. Really besides Wright and Reyes, who do they have over league minimum that adds to the productive nature of their team? The only guys making money next year are Wright, Santana, Dickey, Carrasco and Bay. All the rest are league minimum and a couple of arbitration cases. To me that’s re-building. Now I personally would be willing to trade Wright for the right package, but I bet that the majority of the fanbase would burn Citi down if that happened. No need to piss off a already pissed off fanbase.

Free agency will be poor this year and the Mets cannot trade their way out of this situation. Every move they make will be about 2013 and beyond. They just need get that message out more effectively without it making it look like they are doing it due to the Wilpon financial situation.

I agree they can completely rebuild and keep Wright – I kind of just used him as an example b/c he’s about the only one with any talent that’s currently healthy……

they might still trade wright.  but if they don’t it’s fair to assume it is because he’s young enough to still be productive when the team is, in fact, rebuilt.

and they can afford to pay him (as salty said.) it’s not the same as when teams like the A’s rebuild and trade stars like tejada, giambi, etc. because they can’t afford to keep them.

      1. MetsFan4Decades

O.K. – after reading yours and Salty’s answers, I can I should maybe rethink my mindset.  We might be a little closer to rebuilding that I originally thought.

I won’t be surprised to see them trade Wright this off season.  I hope they don’t though.

Heck, I won’t be surprised by anything Sandy & Co. do this off season.  I’ve long since let go of we can really compete as currently constructed.  I think 2012 is going to be more or less like 2013 (hopefully minus the injuries).
It’s the lack of quality pitching that bothers me the most.  I don’t see having a shot of having quality staff until at least 2013.

        1. SaltyGary

That’s OK if these kids turn out to be any good. It’s tough not to set expectations on them since we are excited to see some decent homegrown talent. Lets not forget the “Generation K”. So there is one more season of utter crap but if we can get 2 good pitchers out of Harvey, Wheeler, Familia and Meija, that will be a nice potential foundation. I am fine with being patient for the next couple years as long as the plan comes into fruition. If there is not upward trend by the end of 2013 I will get my pitchfork.

    Here’s another question/answer I found interesting:

    Mike (NYC)”The organization,
perhaps unintentionally, is doing a tremendous disservice to Harvey,
Mejia, Familia and Wheeler.” Really? How? Because I have not heard
anything outside of saying they are good arms. Should they say nothing
at all? Adam Rubin  (12:20 PM)Talking
about them all as potential frontline starters. That’s not realistic.
Just like Rick Peterson was introduced as the CEO of pitching or a
prophet. It does them a disservice.*********************************************Outside of a handful of rookies – take Strasburg for example – where everyone and their brother immediately labels ‘a front line starter’ – doesn’t every organization over value their prospects to an extent? And from what I’m reading of Harvey many still think he is a front line starter.Sounds like Rubin writes all 4 of them off as front line starter potential.

    1. SaltyGary

I read through the chat log as well and he did explain the Harvey situation more. He said their were comparisons to Pelfrey but thought it made no sense. Said Harvey is strong mentally but their are 2 camps regarding his secondary pitches (Pelfrey comparison) but feels Harvey is much stronger with those pitches at this point in his career. My feeling was he doesn’t want to get on the hye train just yet and instead just view the odds of how many pitchers make their way through to the MLB and what percentage of them are any good.

      1. MetsFan4Decades

I know some take exception to this but I truly believe Rubin makes some comments sometimes just to ‘generate’ more questions in this chat, then flat out answer him.  Seems to be at least one ‘chatter’ who comes back after he answered saying either ‘you missed the point, that’s not the point, or you didn’t answer the question’.

And Ugh…..will we ever see this describing the Mets organization:

SI_JonHeyman: performance of ian kennedy, montero, nunez & nova reflects well on damon oppenheimer & yankees draft/development people

The football Giants lost their starting Middle Linebacker for the season adding to a staggering parade of injuries to key personnel before the season even starts. Most Giants fans root for the Yankees so are not accustomed to such bad luck befalling them. But it should be noted that the football Giants and the Mets use the same medical staff. Anyway the following web site has incontrovertible evidence as to why the Mets and Giants suffer so many injuries every bleeping year:

    1. SaltyGary

As a Giant fan I really wish I didn’t just learn that they use the same medical staff.

Yes, ignorance is bliss in this matter.  I’ve been aware of this nauseating fact for sometime.   Fortunately, they did a hell of a job on my Sister’s hip replacement and thyroid issue that robbed her hip bones of bone density.  Medical “experts” in Florida & Colorado missed it but they found it and got it right.  It is a complete puzzlement that this truly world class medical staff is associated with both our teams and their many maladies.

Just unreal on the Goff injury.  They were expecting a breakout season for him.  I just read last night how their 2 reach picks at LB were looking good and teaming them with Goff they were looking for them to round out to be a strength of the team as the season moved along and for years to come.  Guess that’ll have to wait.   I’m at a complete loss as to how they are going to overcome these injuries since a number of them are season ending.  I’d say just go for trying to outscore everyone till they can get a little healthy but the O is just not clicking and with the changes on the O-line it looks rough.  Gonna need to take it a game at a time.  I guess we’ll see what Kawika Mitchell has left now as the rumored replacement signing.
