Pelf licked the competition tonight.
The Mets wasted a sterling performance by Mike Pelfrey (on the day the organization’s Sterling awards were announced), losing to the Nationals by a score of 2-0.
Pelfrey (7-12) went 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, walking 2 and striking out 6. The 2 runs were unearned, a result of David Wright’s 17th error of the year, his 14th since returning from the disabled list.
Wright bobbled a ground ball in the third inning off the bat of Ian Desmond, allowing the Nats’ shortstop to reach base. One batter later, Ryan Zimmerman walked. Michael Morse and Jayson Werth followed with back-to-back singles to give the Nationals a 2-0 lead.
Brad Peacock (1-0) earned his first Major League win, throwing 94 pitches in 5 innings, combining with the Nationals’ bullpen for the shutout. He kept the Mets off balance despite walking more (3) than he struck out (2). Rick Ankiel helped nail the game down with a spectacular diving catch to rob Jose Reyes of an opposite-field extra base hit with 2 men on in the ninth. Since choking against the Mets as a pitcher for the Cardinals in the 2000 playoffs, Ankiel has come up big on multiple occasions against New York as an outfielder.
The Mets offense remained anemic against Washington pitching. They were shut out tonight after scoring only 2 runs in each of the last two games. Pelfrey, after struggling most of the season, has pitched better of late, allowing no more than 4 earned runs in each of his last 10 outings. Tonight, he allowed no earned runs. But shoddy defense and a lack of offense cost Pelfrey and the Mets tonight.
In other news
Johan Santana decided to skip his rehab start for the Savannah Sand Gnats, realizing it would not be a good idea to over exert himself in a playoff environment, even if it is in A-ball. So it looks like Santana will set his sights on Spring Training 2012. Besides, Johan knows better than to mess with Sand Gnats.
Also, The Mets announced today that AAA Buffalo’s Josh Satin is the organization’s minor league player of the year, and A St. Lucie’s Darin Gorski is the organization’s pitcher of the year.

I could not believe Terry calling for the bunt again and again and again.
Isn’t the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome?
That coupled with the 2 runs scored by Nats being unearned (thanks, David) made this performance tonight almost not worth the 3 hours.
Someone please tell me we won’t be seeing more of the same all next year….

Some of the luster has eroded off of Terry’s personae. The Mets are presently 71-78. After 149 games last year the Mets were 74-75. I really don’t believe that Jerry had much more to work with and he and the players certainly seem to quit last year but their record was better. So much for the impact of all the extra hustling under Terry. You can’t replace talent as the prime reason for winning by employing a nose to the grindstone attitude. In other sports that may be so but not in baseball.
Until the Mets develop a competitive ball club you may as well keep Terry around as the care taker. But if Terry does manage the team next year he better teach some of these players how to bunt.
Presently watching grass grow is preferable to watching the Mets.

Congrats to Carlos Beltran, hitting 2 HRS tonight and reaching 300 HRs on the one as it sailed into McCovey Cove.
Should have been in a Met uniform reaching that plateau. If not for the injuries, probably would have been.
