There are four games left in the season. Next week, I’m rooting for every team to win except the Phillies and the Yankees.
Can you sum up the 2011 season in one word? (please make it clean!)

One word – inconsistent

Mediocre.
Not a real good team, but the manager gets max effort from just about everyone, so wins like Thursday’s against the in-the-middle-of-the-race-Cards are possible, as are sweeps like yesterday’s against the waiting-for-the-playoffs Phils.
But a team with virtually zero pitching and less power can only go so far.
Being mediocre and winning almost 80 games is a serious victory for a team with little real talent.
Mediocre isn’t great, but it is all we can hope for right now.

Promise
From Sandy’s promise to change the culture and improving the talent at the lower ranks: Check
Starting with jettisioning Castillo & Perez to flipping K-Rods contract and extracting the Giants top pitching prospect for Beltran. Followed up by bolstering the minors with a solid first draft Sandy’s fullfilled his promise.
From Terry’s promise to get them to play hard and try to play the game the right way through the entire season: Check
While playing the game the right way is only achievable within the baseball IQ and experience of the players this has been somewhat exposed folding in a number of kids but they have tried so I’ll give them a check. As far as playing hard throughout, Terry kicked their butts after the last homestand and they continue to play hard to game 162 as the latest late game comeback against the Cards shows.
Promise: As in the promise of some of the young talent showing possibilities – Murph’s hitting pre-injury, Tejada growing at a tender 21 years and continuing to provide tough AB’s with risp, Ike hopefully coming back next year, the awaiting of Harvey, Wheeler, Familia with Mejia hopefully re-surfacing at somepoint next season, and Duda could be a nice power bat if he finds a home in the field. So there is promise in the up & coming ranks.
I’m not kidding myself, I understand a viable post season product is still years away, but, they are on the right track I believe. And next year we may see by post ASB the first spottings of Harvey & Familia in the rotation. And with MLB looking to add another wild card spot into the post season formula adds to the potential for 2013 being a viable post season WC team and the beginning of a real team that can sustain for some time. 2012? who knows – I’m ready for it to be another building year but if they are able to spend a little dough this off season anything can happen if there’s another WC spot in the mix.
Clearly, I’m in glass half full mode here.

I like your glass half full mode here, Haz.
I agree but don’t think we’re as many years away as some might believe.

I have an optimistic friend that after Hurricane Irene hit us referred to his basement as being half-full.

Expected.
I expected this 2011 team to finish around .500, but always hoped the stars would be aligned just right and it would be more. Wasn’t meant to be.
However, maybe because I had lower – or more realistic – expectations going into this season more so than ’09 and ’10, what I watched for the most part was just fun and at times a bit exciting.
I see promise, I see a turning point, I see better for the future. With the new FO, the new ‘plan’, it might take us a couple more years to be competitive but I believe we’ll get there. And once there, stay there for a good long while.

Unfortunately I can’t reduce it to one word but rather I can describe it in two words.
Happy—that there is a competent front office.
Sad—that the Wilpons still own the team.
