This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty: The “What Is Your Favorite Moment Of The Season?” Edition 09-27-11

Okay there are two bittersweet games left to the Mets ’11 season and it is safe to say that there were some massive highs and deep lows.  We all know that I predicted before the season started that the team would finish over .500. Okay so I was wrong, but even with that being said this was a more exciting, more relevant season than last year.

From the first loss of the season ( to the Marlins) to tomorrow’s coda with the Reds this team had fought through injury and the odds to keep themselves into the pennant race until mid August.

I have a quick question though – What do you think was the most memorably moment of the season ? Was it the Dillon Gee one hitter ? Was it seeing Chris Young dominating in his brief Mets career ? Could it have been one of Ike Davis’ moon shot homers ? Was it possibly when the Mets took 2-3 from the Yankees ? is it something else which I haven’t mentioned?

For me the most memorable moment from this season was Carlos Beltran’s final home run as a Met in Citi Field. I was at that game, sitting 3 sections away from where the ball landed in the Pepsi Porch. I felt a melancholy feeling overcome me like this was a loose end for which he was tying up. But for me it was a seminal point of the season. We saw some familiar faces that started the season with us gone before tomorrow’s final out.

Do you agree with my moment ? Do you disagree ? Let me know in the comments section.

And with that said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!

Mets alumni celebrating a birthday today includes:

Middle reliever from the ’87 season, Don Schulze is 49(1962). He appeared in 5 games for the Mets that season and finished with a record of 1-2 with a E.R.A OF 6.23. He would sign with the Twins as a free agent after the season ended.

Catcher/first baseman from ’01-’04, Jason Phillips is 35 (1976). Phillips would later be traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for relief pitcher, Kaz Ishii.

Mo Vaughn will be signing autographs this weekend at the Waffle House in Peoria, Illinois this Saturday from 8 A.M to 8 P.M. Be sure to bring him a plate of waffles for payment. If you bring extra bacon he will personally will take a picture with you.

For me, the high point was seeing Gee’s 1 hitter. Wasn’t there personally, but nice to see him take the next step. Second place, is Pelf’s complete game- we thought that he’d turned a corner, but in fact it was business as usual for Big Mike. Third would be the evolution of Ruben Tejada- this kid’s going to be special. Well, 140 or so days, until Pitchers and Catchers! Let’s Go Mets!!!

Well, I hope the most memorable moment for me won’t be watching Reye’s last game in a Met uniform as he goes on to win the batting crown…

As I’ve watched just about every game – none lucky enough from Citi field though – it’s hard for me to pick just one.  Gee’s outstanding game was one, for sure.  Carlos’ 3 HR game on the road was another.  That comeback against the Cardinals the other day sure was fun.

I enjoyed this season more than I thought I would.  Probably because I more or less knew going in this was going to be a .500 season so expectations were low.  Got to watch many of the lower level players get a chance to make a mark as well – even though it was b/c of injuries to the ‘core’.  You don’t often get to see that in a competitive-going-to-post season type year.

    As always, LGM!

Mine will come about 5PM tomorrow when this lost-season will
finally come to an end. It’ll be remembered by me as one of only
3 or 4 in my 39 seasons as a fan in which I had really no hope
to make the playoffs and it didn’t have the feel of….Lets say ’83
where we got a talent like Mex for nothing and Straw was just getting his feet wet. For me, a lost season which will only get worse
if we end up losing Reyes and if it turns out Johan isn’t gonna be
      Johan anymore.

Those late 70s/early 80s teams were the absolute worst.  After the departure of Seaver, it was all downhill until the prospects Cashen drafted started making some noise in the minors.

You knew before the season started they weren’t going anywhere in those years.  Talk about no stars….there were hardly any very good players on those teams either.

WOW – DNL is reporting the judge dismissed ALL but 2 counts on the Madoff clawback case for the Wilpons.

Well, can we please sign Jose Reyes now?

    1. Adam "Prismo"

Why? Now the Wilpons get to lower payroll AND keep their money! Win/win for them!

Now Jim Dolan…….I mean Jeff Wilpon (a Freudian slip there) can run the franchise for the next 50 years. Aren’t we lucky?

Also:  SNY announcing that the Mets have picked up Terry Collins 2013 option as manager.
