The OBP is impressive so Hudgens has them doing something right at the plate but the overall team ERA is what buried this team, specifically the bullpen which has almosts always been a problem. I honestly wonder what this season would look like had the BP had shown more stability as it seemed like it had an impact in almost every loss.

well, I would guess that 1 more reliable/solid upper part of the rotation SP, combined with a reliable BP, would have been worth at least 10 more wins, putting this team right up there with the 2007/2008 squads in the upper 80s for wins, and fighting for the WC. Plus, they would likely not have traded Beltran.

This is actually 1 reason I don’t think 2012 is a guaranteed lost cause.  I expect another SP to be brought in, they MAY get something out of Johan, and frankly, the carry overs (other than Dickey) just can’t be any worse (or if Pelf goes, replacement must be better!).

So, if the SP improves (and 2010 was not bad at all), that leaves the pen, and that is probably the 1 area that it is easiest to make a major overhaul in 1 off season, even without a huge budget.  Get lucky with the right couple arms, and suddenly it is not a black hole!

Hopefully though if the pitching does improve, the offense doesn’t tail off.  Not really worried about that, even if Reyes goes, as long as Ike comes back strong and they find a 2B that can hit.

Now that you have all the bases covered, the only thing we have to worry about are the inevitable injuries.  :)
