And in other news on SNY Loudmouths they just stated the Nats want to bring in Wally Backman as third base coach.  Sounds like Davey Johnson finishing school for Wally and then he’d be the Nats Manager.

I can’t see anyone currently employed in a favorable situation leaving to work for Peter Angelos.

for a GM job?  Plenty of guys would take the money and go for the experience, since once you are in the “club” you tend to get recycled!

That’s not always true. I haven’t seen too many ex-Angelos GM’s go on to bigger and better things. Given that he will fire you in three unsuccessful years you may be better off remaining an assistant GM on a successful franchise and be that hot assistant. Also some people may not be able to work for Angelos.

That’s why the guys that aren’t really the “hot assistant” are more likely to jump at is, since it may be their only chance.  Or it could speed up the process by years.

Someone will always be willing to take the job, since there aren’t many to go around, even if not their first choice.

I don’t know how everyone else may feel about this issue but I’d be disappointed to see Backman go. I do not know exactly what it is but I feel as if perhaps he is almost the equivalent of a managerial insurance policy for the Mets if Collins proves to be less successful than hoped. Either way Wally was a great met and an excellent coach in his time spent in the minors, yet I cannot blame the Mets for feeling the need to exercise caution given their recent magnetism toward media fiasco and frenzy and the risk of mishandling a potentially explosive personality such as backman in a position of importance.

I like him, but really don’t think it will hurt the franchise at all if he moves on.
