The Sunday Question

The World Series hasn’t even begun and there has been already talk of free agents.  We all know that the Mets have targeted Reyes as their number one priority.  But let’s say they sign Reyes to a 4 year deal.  Should the Mets change their philosopy and  begin signing other free agents?  Realistically, how many players are the Mets short to be a contender?  Would a Pujols or Fielder change this team?

“Should the Mets change their philosopy and  begin signing other free agents?”

Isn’t that what got them in this mess?

it was actually signing the wrong ones, for too many years/$$, that did it.

of course a Fielder or Pujols will change this team.  they would change any team!

Fielder I don’t even consider.  But Pujols, certainly he moves them to the next level.  But, the big but (hey, sounds like a song!) is, if that is all they do (putting the rest of the roster together from the scrap heap), will it be enough to make the WC?  Maybe, but with lots of “ifs”.  and frankly, if all those Ifs come together and Ike comes back where he left off, they will be a contender without Albert.

So sign reyes, and try for a few mid-tier FAs to fill in the holes.  And make some trades damn it!

anyway, to answer what I seem to recall the question being, if they sign Reyes not, I don’t see them signing another huge $$ LT FA deal.  No Albert, No prince (besides, 1B is (if Ike recovers) probably their strongest position on the roster).  Maybe a CJ WIlson if the price does not get out of hand.

Bigger wild card in the deck to me is if they have the balls to try and sign Reyes and move Wright.  I think they would if someone blinked and offered an overpay, except for not having any prospect ready to step in (I just don’t see Murphy as the starting 3B).

BB is a fickle mistress.  sometimes what you think is a strength falls short, and what you worry about turns out fine.  So who knows, the pitching may be just fine.

Pick up a closer and a few new BB arms, and if the rotation puts up innings, could be fine again.

maybe Santana really can come back.  Neise takes the next step.  They bring in another solid guy (wilson/shields maybe).  Hit the jackpot on a recovery guy.  Etc. etc.  All ifs, but if a couple of them hit, suddenly the rotation may not be such a black hole.

wrapping this up, if they pitching can be stabilize,  then yes, 1 more big bat could make the difference.

Perhaps Robert Redford will show up as the “natural” and lead the Mets to another championship.

If those other FAs are Wilson and Yu, then yeah, that could make a difference.

And as for Reyes, 4 years should account for about 2/3 of the length of contract he’ll command.

Yu are all about Darvish,,, Of any FA signing I am always the most shy about the Japanese players. That guy will cost a bunch and I would rather throw that kind of money at Fielder hitting balls over the bridge.

I just mention Yu (and CJ) because the biggest need this team has is SP.  More than Reyes.

And yeah, Fielder would be amazing.  Slap Ike in RF or trade him for Cain or Shields or whomever.  Getting sponge bathed by the Swedish bikini team every night would be nice too.

If the Mets sign Reyes, I don’t see any other big FA signings.  I don’t know that Wilson will be worth what he’s probably asking.  I’d love for them to bid on Yu, but I’m thinking that probably won’t happen.  We’re going to need an ace to anchor the staff of young arms coming up in the next few years.  I think Darvish just might be that guy.  But I’m reading he might not even come over to the USA this year.

I’d pass on Pujols and Fielder.  Not that they aren’t great bats but I just think that money could be better well spent.

I’ll be happy if they resign Reyes.  I just don’t see them trading Wright over the off season.  He’ll be the starting 3rd baseman come opening day.  What happens after that though – come trade deadline or next off season, is anyone’s guess.

If they sign Reyes, that is going to be it for big deals.  That will leave them already with 4 guys making 16+, and if Reyes gets say 18, you have ~75mill tied up in 4 guys.  Based on Sandy’s 110 estimate, that leaves 35mill for the other 21.

so unless they somehow trade bay and don’t eat salary (can’t happen) or trade Wright (not likely, but at least possible), or of course they run back up to 140 (would be nice, but again, not likely!).

I also don’t expect a Wright trade, but I actually would not be shocked by it, and if the return is really good, will support it.

I think how to proceed depends on what you think the team can do.  If there is a chance to add the pieces to be a legit WC contender, you probably need wright.  If you are already looking at 2013, moving him could give you a better shot.

Of course, there is a chance if you get say a solid SP and a starting C back, they could be better in 2012 too, but that will be a long shot.

But Will, NOT signing FAs would be changing their philosophy.

We are several starters and several bullpen arms and a power bat away from contention.

There’s no chance of Pujols or Fielder; zero.

Fielder a good argument could be made for; young, hits for power and gets on base. Ike could play RF as he has in his life before. But they will never give him the deal he will demand.

Pujols? A huge deal at age 32 when he is–while still great—clearly in decline across the board statistically? Every offensive # has gone down the last 2 years; His OPS is down 200 pts the last 2 years. Signing him is the Minaya way.

We’re probably not getting Jose back, and even if we do, it will be the only move.

Be brave and be patient Met fans. The years in the weeds are not over yet.

A Pujols deal now has the potential to turn into a much larger, much longer, Jason Bay.  Still a very, very good player, but at 32, how long can he dominate?

“several starters, several BP arms, and a power bat”

Actually, that isn’t too bad.  BP guys are up and down and come out of the woodwork all the time.  And starters, 1 smart trade and 1 luck job (see: dickey) and you are back on track (with, of course, guys you already have reaching their potential).

Keep the reality coming my friend, I’ve been outnumbered here for the last couple months.

If I ever catch up on life, I will actually finish that post about what I think they should do this off season.  I do believe that if they make the right moves (and a few bets pay off) they can have the potential to be in the WC hunt next year. And that is without mortgaging any of the future.

Key has to be making moves that are for at least a 2-3 year horizon if they are big, and plugging in gaps with 1 year guys.

And Bay needs to platoon, in RF>  That part is not negotiable!

2012 Mets 4th-5th place, maybe 3th place… too many “IF`s”… Santana- Davis health, Wright-Bay-Duda productivity… shaky CF-C-Bullpen… other than Niese-Dickey not reliable pitching. let`s wait for 2013 and our prospects… and  probably deal for almost ready pitching and catching.

    1. SaltyGary

I feel if other fans can be patient like you , there will be a greater long term outcome. Blowing the orgs wad just to try and sneak in the post season is the same crap that keeps hurting this team. Slow and steady wins the race…
