Former Met Coach Chip Hale Says Ruben Tejada Will Be A “Big Contributor” in 2012

Adam Rubin of ESPNNY in a post that discussed the Mets being prepared to have Ruben Tejada take over at shortstop if they are unable to retain Jose Reyes had former Mets coach Chip Hale share his thoughts about Tejada saying at one point that Tejada will be a “big contributor” to the team next season. Some other things Hale said worth mentioning are:

“His physical presence has improved. He’s gotten bigger. He’s gotten stronger. And I think he will continue to. And that’s enabled him to make all the plays he needs to.”

“Baseball intelligence, he’s way above his age… He’s not the usual 21.”

Well, he’s no Jose Reyes but good to know we’ve got a competent SS who is major league ready to take over, if need be and shouldn’t have to comb the market looking for someone.

I’m not a big fan, and don’t think he brings enough to the table with the bat to be a starter (and his D is not special enough either), but at least it would eliminate the need to get a stiff like Wilson Valdez.  and who knows, maybe he develops quicker/more than I am expecting?

Like you said though, never going to replace what Jose brings to the table.

I don’t know SRT, maybe we should check with our good buddy over at MMO?  After all, he played the game, and we are too clueless to understand all the grand nuances, so we just spend all day in front of a spreadsheet, right?

            You crack me up.

And yeah, Tejada will be OK.  No Reyes, but OK.  Now, if the whole “save the money for pitching thing” comes up…

            LOL

If he tells me one more time I’m just a dumb broad who should get her head out of the baseball books and spreadsheets I read…….

trade him to the A’s then, let Hale try to get contributions from him.

Tejada could be a good SS, but Reyes is a great _player_
