First off I would like to congratulate the St Louis Cardinals on their dispensing of the Texas Rangers last night 4 games to 3. I wish I could say I meant what I just wrote, but the memory of ’85 and ’06 still weigh heavily on my memory.
This morning I came upon a quote from Bud Selig in Adam Rubin’s ESPN Mets Blog. Here is what the MLB commissioner had to say about the Mets non payment of the 25 million dollar loan issued by the league.
Speaking before Game 7 of the World Series, commissioner Bud Selig indicated the Mets have not yet paid back the $25 million loan made late last year by Major League Baseball.
Here’s the exact exchange:
Q. Have the Mets paid you back yet?
COMMISSIONER BUD SELIG: Have the Mets paid me back personally? Do they owe me something? (Laughter).
No, but we’re doing fine with the Mets. I don’t have any concerns about the Mets, as I think I’ve told you before. They’re working on an alternative financing plan, and they seem to be very encouraged and I’m encouraged. I do have a lot of worries today, but frankly I’m happy to say the Mets are not one of them.
Kind of ironic that the used car salesman from Wisconsin gave no quarter to the soon to be Los Angeles Dodgers owner, Frank McCourt- – basically wrenching the ownership out of his hands, yet his good old ally – Fred Wilpon appears to be safe. File this under things that make you go hmm…
And with that said… HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!
Mets alumni celebrating a birthday today includes:
Folk hero from this current Mets era, knuckleball pitcher R. A. Dickey is 37 (1974). With his humble candor with both the fans and media , it is easy to see why R.A is so well regarded.
Outfielder from the ’04 team, Karim Garcia is 36 (1975). Karim, along side his former Yankee teammate Shane Spencer, proved to be clubhouse cancers for that seasons Mets team.
The New York Mets traded second baseman, Ken Boswell to the Houston Astros for reserve outfielder, Bob Gallagher on October 29, 1974.
The Mets granted pitcher, Pedro Astacio granted free agency on October 29, 2003.
The Mets granted outfielder, Shawn Green free agency on October 29, 2007. He was a power hitting threat in his years as both a Blue Jay and a Dodger. But his power was greatly diminished by the time he joined the Mets midway into the ’06 season.
Mo Vaughn is hankering for a hunk of cheese !!!

from the stuff I have read about what was going on with the Dodgers, I don’t think they are close to the same situation. McCourt is probably indictable for some of the stuff he did, while the Mets just have cash flow issues essentially at the moment. Nothing an extra million fans through the turnstiles (what a quaint notion, turnstiles, kind of like dialing a phone) wouldn’t cure.
Damn, I am old.

Ha! you’re not the only one.
Found myself explaining to a young Met fan over the summer what a rotary phone was and how it worked. Damn…

Where you live don’t they still have party lines and the main operator’s name is Sarah and when you want to call someone you crank the hand-crank and ask Sarah to connect you to who you wish to speak with?

The Dodgers have right to be really pissed at Uncle Bud. Completely unfair to seize control of the LAD and look the other way on the Mets loan. Didn’t Astacio have a nickname that meant “big mule” in Spanish?

I don’t think comparing the Mets and Dodgers ownerships you can draw too many similarities other than they both have financial problems.
McCourt apparently funneled team money for personal use. Jeeze, the guy sold off everything including the parking lot – other than the team itself, to say afloat.
The Wilpons on the other hand were victims of the Madoff ponzi scheme. I know everyone has their own opinion on this. Mine is while they might have been fools, the Wilpons didn’t know.
So it’s the day after the World Series has ended.
Have we signed Reyes yet?

The similarities are that both teams are mediocre and have attendance problems and both were run very poorly. And it really does help to be buddies with the commissioner.
