The Sunday Question

Long hail the Hot Stove!  At this point, with the leaves turning colors, it’s all we got.

It’s all Jose Reyes and why not?  It seems the Mets will be in limbo until either he signs or rejects their offer.  So what will the offer be?  How many years and how much are Mets willing to offer Reyes?

4 years at 20 mil per year with 2 option years based on easily obtained goals.

Sounds O.K BUT he’s never gonna accept that.

I think the Mets’ offer will be four years at $15-$18 million per year, with options for a 5th & 6th season. I would give him 5 years at $18 million per year, with options for a 6th & 7th based on games played.

That’s great too…..And he will reject it and move on to the highest bidder.

so let’s see, Fongy thinks it is all about the guaranteed $.

If he takes a deal with option years it means that he really did want to stay with the mets, and was willing to work with them to get it done.

The structure of the deal is basically a bet.  If Reyes takes more years at a lower AAV, he is betting that he will break down and not be worth it towards the end.  if he takes a 4 year at more per year + a couple of hefty option years (vesting) he is betting that he will stay healthy and productive, and be worth it those years too.

I understand locking in security and all that for your family, but if a deal is say 4/80 guaranteed + 2 more vesting options at 20mill per, to me the 80 no matter what (on top of the 40+ he has already made) should be enough to stay off food stamps and send the kids to college.  And buy a small country.

I am guessing that the Mets will give him a range of offers to choose from.  different combos of length 9fixed + options) and $$/year.  If he wants more guaranteed, he gets less per year.

I think they are going to offer about 4/72 if they even make a serious offer.

The Mets just laid off 15 or so people to save under a million bucks.

Just as the Nabobs turned out to be right about this team the last few years, they also are 100% right on finances.

The Mets cannot afford Jose’s market price, and the only hope is that other offers don’t materialize or that he decides to stay with the comforts of the only team he has ever known.

But I don’t see that happening. Like all of us, Jose would like to see the playoffs again before he is old. That’s not happening anytime soon in Queens.

It’s ugly, but it will get worse before it gets better.

affording though is based on revenues.  Someone has to be doing the math to figure out how many less tickets they will sell if Jose isn’t signed, and if that will more than offset the savings?

They are not selling tickets with him on the team and attendance will go down again this year no matter what.

I think Sandy is stuck walking a fine line between having to keep the Wilpons afloat to afford the team – i.e. slashing payroll – and making it look like on paper at least, the Mets will field a competitive team.

IMO, there is no way they come out with an offer as low as 4/72.  If they do, they shouldn’t even bother and should have said from the get go they can’t afford Reyes.

The Wilpons need revenue, desperately.  If Reyes walks b/c the FO did offer a competitive offer and he takes the highest one, so be it. (and in that case, they should have traded him mid season.)

But if they just make some token effort, the masses will revolt and 2012 might wind up being the lowest attendance since the late 70s.

Kong your Dolphins may have lost their chance at the number one overall pick with this win. It appears as if the Colts will run the “inverse” table and this one win may hurt more than help the Dolphin’s future.

I saw a clip of a fan in Indy wearing a Colts #12 Luck jersey. Sports fans are funny.
