At Least Now The Rehearsal Is Out Of The Way

OK, so in case you missed it there was what can be described as a rehearsal of what to expect if or when Reyes signs with another team. It started with the following tweet from some satellite radio personality.

It was then followed with a flood of tweets scrambling to find if the rumor was true and angry tweets that the Mets allowed this to happen. A few hours later came a tweet from one of Reyes agents describing his afternoon and how he was having a “#verynormalsunday” . You can read into that as much or as little as you wish but just wanted to make note in case you was not aware of it.

Soon after came a tweet from MLB Network Radio denying earlier rumors that they had reported Reyes had indeed signed with the Marlins pending a physical.

Finally CBS Sports tweeted soon after that the reports of Reyes having already agreed to signing with the Marlins were “untrue”.

Now against what seems to be the overwhelming popular opinion I am of the belief the 2 sides can still work a deal out but for those that don’t agree allow me to recommend a suggestion Adam Rubin of ESPN New York made in a post.

Is it bad that I’ve entirely stopped caring about where Reyes goes or what he does? This just needs to end so all the insanely stupid end of the world diatribes from Mets fans about Reyes leaving can get out of the way sooner.

I agree.  Just get it over with.  If he goes, the team will survive, as with every player.

And based on reading some other sites (something that is getting more tiring by the day!) the insanely stupid crowd will just find other diatribes to beat into the ground.

If anything positive it to come out of this stretch of time for the Mets, it would have to be some of the more annoying “fans” finally following through on their threats and being done with the team forever!

Unfortunately, the self-pitying diabtribes will continue whether Reyes signs with the Mets not. It’s a sad sign of the times, and includes some in the media, me-me-me-first society, immediate gratification needs.

It’s that fanbase mentality that keeps a “big market team” from going through a proper rebuild, and instead we get the “ram the Titanic into the iceberg because it’ll be interesting and people will watch” Omar mentality. Ugh. I’ve been hoping for a true rebuild for several years. Thanks to Madoff and the Wilpon financial mess, I finally get to watch it.

I’m in disagreement about need for the type of rebuild you favor. I think every season should involve retooling according to need and future projections of in-house talent.

Ah….the always glib Adam Rubin.  He may spend most of his waking hours covering the team and talking to fans but make no mistake – he’s not a NY Met fan.  He couldn’t possibly have any idea what it’s like.

In some small way, this is comparable to:
    - your company being taking over or downsizing.  You know the end is near but you’re holding out hope you somehow avoid the ax – until the pink slip is in your hands.

    - you’ve made that incredibly hard decision, you’ve fought the fight, you’ve dismantled the partnership, you’ve divied up the assests….but it somehow doesn’t hit you until you’ve got that signed divorce degree in your hand.

    -   You’ve known for awhile each day has been living on borrowed time but when the vet says ‘she’s lived a good long life’, you’re never ready.

All the above is much more devastating and after all, baseball is just a game.  But the mindset among most Met fans is similar right now.

Reyes is as good as gone and was the day Alderson took over – for any that were paying attention.  The Wilpons made some incredibly bad decisions – from solely investing Sterling Mets with Madoff to extending Minaya’s contract.  Alderson was brought in to start the rebuilding and tread water while the Wilpons try and climb of the financial mess they’re in, all the while crossing their fingers they can hold onto the team.  I believe in the long run, they’ll be forced to sell because slashing payroll isn’t going to do it.  They need revenue and I can’t see that increase taking place for at least some years now.  2012 will be worse than the last 5 years as there’s not a shred of optimism left on where this team is going next year.

When Reyes does sign on the dotted line with some other team, the backlash will be severe – even among those who do see the handwriting on the wall.

Excellent piece.  I agree all around.

Now go post it for Bayonne and see what he says!

hahaha – He along with his side kick Metsies would probably have their heads exploding….

    2. Adam "Prismo"

So….why didn’t they just trade him?

      1. MetsFan4Decades

        Trade him when?
He got injured on 2 July playing the Yankees and went on the DL.  When he came back on 19 July – and through the 31 July trade deadline – his numbers for those couple weeks weren’t that good.  Probably b/c that hamstring wasn’t fully healed or he was a bit tentative – or both.

Hindsight is 20/20.  So unless Alderson knew what his July was going to be like, his only chance of trading him for his worth would have been in June.  Maybe he would have listened to some serious offers end of July – especially since we waived the white flag and traded Beltran and KRod – but given his injury in July any offers he might have got maybe he deemed just not that good.

        Just speculation on my part…..
