Mets Protect Seven From Rule 5 Draft

According to a tweet from Adam Rubin, the Mets have added Robert Carson, Jeurys Familia, Wilmer Flores, Reese Havens, Juan Lagares, Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Cesar Puello to their 40-man roster to protect them from the rule-5 draft, which will take place at the winter meetings in December.

Go here: http://realdirtymets.com/2011/11/15/rule-5-draft-preview/ to read my preview of the rule 5 draft to see how wrong I was in my predictions and read about several of the guys that were not added.

Carson and Lagares just finished playing in the Arizona Fall League. We’ll have more coverage of the AFL, these roster additions, and the rule 5 draft in the coming days.

So who is NOT protected who care about?

Brad Holt is probably the biggest name, and as I wrote here:  http://realdirtymets.com/2011/11/15/rule-5-draft-preview/ Holt is the classic type that teams take a chance on, so I wouldn’t be shocked if he was picked.  Collin McHugh is also unprotected, he could be chosen.

I was loosely following Holt for the past couple of years.
Even if he does get picked up, I’m not thinking that’s any kind of loss.  I just don’t see him as anything more than a middle reliever at this point.  Shame, because he started out with more promise.

I don’t know much about McHugh.

I’m happy to see the 7 that were added to the roster though.
So that brings the roster up to 37?  3 spots to play with if we pick up a Rule V guy?

I just did a quick count and there was 31 plus the 7, so it’s 38 total, which doesn’t leave a lot of flexibility at the moment.

Once Reyes is gone that drops to 37 total… ;)

Actually Reyes is already off the roster, as is everybody else that has filed for free agency.

Ah yes, that’s a good point.

Where does the time go?  When they drafted Reese Havens I would have never thought he would be a guy who would even sniff Rule 5 considerations.  Fully expected him on the Big Team by now.  Maybe health will be on his side this year.
