This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty: The “Who’s Next ?” Edition 11-22-11

Well it’s that time of year again. The time when we all max out our credit cards to buy our loved ones gifts for the upcoming holidays. I think one of the most sought after gifts for Mets fans will be the recently introduced retro uniforms that will be worn next season. The question that I have is now that it seems more obvious with each passing day that Jose Reyes will not be donning these new Mets uniforms come April is which Mets player will rise from the b-level ( t-shirts and custom made jerseys from the team store) to join the ranks of Wright, Santana, Bay and Ike ?

Will it be Daniel Murphy ? I think there is a strong possibility it can be Murphy, the hitting machine who needs to find a steady position. But there is also the possibility that he may be traded come this off season.

Will is be Lucas Duda ? I think Lucas may be bestowed that honor during the ’13 season if he rises up to the potential that he is projected to have.

Could it be Angel Pagan ? I think that if he isn’t non-tendered or traded this off season and proves that he can be the man in center field then perhaps they will start selling his jersey mid season.

What about Mike Pelfrey ? Only if it is made out of that fruit flavored material that Willie Wonka used to make the wallpaper for nurseries.

Bobby Parnell Perhaps ? I like Parnell, and I do maintain that he may very well end up fighting through his growing pains to become the Mets closer of the future. But at this juncture, I think a Kenny Rogers Mets jersey would sell better.

But if you ask me which new player jersey will be sold next season, I would most confidently proclaim that it will be R.A Dickeys. Dickey has gone from journeyman pitcher to folk hero here in New York. i think that if the Mets start selling his jersey at the team store, it will be one of the top sellers.

I know what you may be asking me – well what iff the Mets sign a free agent or trade for a player between now and Opening Day ?  Well to be honest, I do not see many fans clamoring for a Val Pascucci jersey at this point .

Or maybe we will ?

And with that said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!

Mets alumni celebrating a birthday includes:

Current Mets General Manager (savior?), Sandy Alderson is 64 (1947).

Reserve outfielder from the ’73 season, Rich Chiles is 62 (1949).

Mets middle reliever from the ’92 season, Lee Guetterman is 53 (1958) .

Mets middle reliever from ’97-’88, Gene Walter is 51 (1960).

Mets outfielder from ’98-’02, Jay Payton is 39 (1972). I still maintain that Payton was the best outfielder on the ’00 Mets team (if that’s saying much).

Mets reserve outfielder from ’06-’07, Ricky Ledee is 38 (1973).

The Baltimore Orioles signed Sid Fernandez of the New York Mets as a free agent on November 22, 1993. The loss of Fernandez always bothered me. yes he was injury plagued and at time erratic, but when he was on his game – he was deadly to opposing hitters.

The New York Mets signed free agent spot starter/middle reliever, Mike Remlinger on November 22, 1993.

The San Diego Padres claimed middle reliever, Jason Middlebrook of the New York Mets on waivers on November 22, 2000. Middlebrook would spend two seasons with the Mets, going a combined 1-6 with an E.R.A of 4.77.

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays signed starting pitcher, Jason Roach of the New York Mets as a free agent on November 22, 2004.Roach started 2 games for the Mets that season, and went 0-2 with a E.R.A of 12.00.

Mo Vaughn is looking forward to his turkey induced coma on Thanksgiving !

Let’s see, just talking Jersey’s?  Not elevating to become a new core foundation block?

Dickey is obvious.  Surprised they don’t sell it already!

Murphy (if he stays) for all the Irish people out there (maybe they should trade him to Boston?)

Duda because he is going to have a monster year and energize the fans.

    That’s about it for now!

But nice to see a new post.

I’ve been thinking of purchasing a Dickey pin stripe one.

Surprised you’re saying they don’t have a Dickey jersey yet because I thought I read somewhere this week where RA Dickey’s jersey was the best selling last year.   Maybe it was RA Dickey tee shirts?

The only Dickey jerseys were the custom made ones

I’ll probably buy a blue Spring Training customized Reyes 7. or nothing.

will peruse the store while I’m there today though.

35% off on Friday. That’s a $70 off a authentic. MLB.com is currently doing 15-35% off based on how much you buy.

probably won’t sell me a Reyes then, and I’m not sure the blue is available yet.

I got a authentic cream pinstripe Davis 2 seasons ago. I have another $200 in MLB gift cards but I am going to wait until next season when the team is more settled and the “Los Mets” become standard issue.

Will the Big Pelf shirt have snozzberries??

Well, I would say Murph if he plays well will become a major crowd favorite.

I would say right now, the odds have increased that Jose stays a Met. If no more offers materialize, he probably comes home. But, I still think that, a la the Yanks with Teixeira and the Phils with Lee, someone is going to swoop in and sweep Jose off his feet (and probably tweak his hamstring while doing it.)

I for one am resigned to another 1-2 years of 4th place, and probably 5th in 2012 as Ozzie will have the Marlins much improved as will Davey with the Nats. And with no NBA and the Dolphins 3-7 (should be 5-5 dammit) I am pretty much ready for spring training.

‘I would say right now, the odds have increased that Jose stays a Met.’
      I like your thinking, Kingman…..

Maybe I’ll spring for a Jose #7 on Friday, since according to Salty they’ll be some good sales at MLB.com on Friday…..

Your a Nets fan right? Then you are not missing anything from the NBA. You need to find a team that has a chance to win. LOL

Try watching some college basketball. Growing up in CT I am a fanatical UCONN fan and starting in January, the college schedule picks up and there is a lot of good basketball to be had.

Yeah, a lifelong Net fan–what can I say? My Dad started taking me to games in 1977. And while the last few years have been brutal, 2001–2006 were awesome. And with Lopez and Williams and our coach, we do have a decent foundation. I actually miss watching the Nets more than I thought I would.

I went to U of Vermont, and the last 7-8 years they have developed a good program. Just one NCAA tourney win, against Syracuse a while ago, but they are pretty good every year and have made the tourney a few times.

My wife is a UVM alum ’00. She is not much of a sports fan but we were literally jumping on the couch for 20 minutes during that Cuse UVM game. By far one of the best tourney games. UVM has done really well since entering D1 basketball.

Also one of my college roommates parents had season tickets to the Nets (4 Tickets per game), so I saw a bunch of games during the Jason Williams, Van Horn era. They were competitive and fun to watch. I am such a casual NBA fan and probably follow the Celtics the most but don’t act like I have any true allegiance. If the Knicks or Celts are good I pay attention to them both even though that is kind of illegal.

Only Mets player I’ve ever considered getting an authentic jersey of is Mike Piazza. No other Met I’ve watched comes close to justifying that purchase for me. And it would be either a black jersey or a solid white one.

I really couldn’t care less about retro jerseys, they hold no significance in my memory. I’m young enough where my best Mets memories are centered around the black and solid white jerseys.

I have a Mets credit card, so it makes it easier to drop that coin. Besides that one authentic that I listed above I also have Korean knockoff’s of Alfonzo (black) and Reyes (white) that I got on eBay. Got them for $30 a piece. The Alfonzo one is perfect and the Mets logo patch on Reyes has a funky skew to it but for $30, no complaints.
