And with that said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!
Mets alumni celebrating a birthday today includes:
Today would have marked the 99th birthday of one time Brooklyn Dodgers great and one of the first Mets coaches ever, Cookie Lavagetto (1912).
One of the most disliked Mets players of all time, outfielder George Foster is 63 (1948).
Mets current pitching coach, Dan Warthen is 59 (1952).
Middle reliever from the ’90 season, Dan Schatzeder is 57 (1954).
Spot starter/middle reliever from the ’92 season, Tom Filer is 55 (1956) .
One time top outfield prospect for the Mets, Herm Winningham is 50 (1961) .
Middle reliever from ’89-’90, Julio Machado is 46 (1965).
Middle reliever from ’97-99, Greg McMichael is 45 (1966) . In his 3 seasons with the Mets Greg went 13-14 with 8 saves and a E.R.A of 3.54.
The New York Mets traded starting pitcher/reliever, Bob Miller to the Los Angeles Dodgers for first baseman, Tim Harkness and utility infielder, Larry Burright on December 1, 1962.
The Houston Astros drafted spot starter/middle reliever, Jack DiLauro from the Mets on December 1, 1969.
The New York Mets traded middle reliever, Ron Herbel to the Atlanta Braves for third baseman, Bob Aspromonte on December 1, 1970.
The Cincinnati Reds signed middle reliever, Pete Smith of the New York Mets as a free agent on December 1, 1994.
The New York Mets traded one time power hitting catcher, Todd Hundley and pitching prospect, Arnold Gooch to the Los Angeles Dodgers for outfielder, Roger Cedeño and catcher, Charles Johnson on December 1, 1998.
Later on in the day……
The New York Mets traded catcher, Charles Johnson to the Baltimore Orioles for closer, Armando Benitez on December 1, 1998. I admit that I hold much animosity for Benitez, yet I will admit this was one of the better deals of the Steve Phillips era.
The Philadelphia Phillies signed catcher, Brian Schneider of the New York Mets as a free agent on December 1, 2009. I never thought I would say that I wish Schneider was still on the Mets roster.
Mo Vaughn is doing side work as one of Santa’s Elves at The Staten Island Mall. Don’t expect your kid to get the complimentary candy cane afterwards – just saying !
