Mets Join The Hot Stove With 2 Signings And A Trade (But Where Is The Partridge In A Pear Tree?)

The New York Mets who have been nonexistent during this Hot Stove season finally joined the party even if their contribution (using the party analogy) was to bring the paper plates & spoons. Still you can’t eat without a paper plate & spoon.

1st the Mets signed Jon Rauch to a reported 1 year deal pending a physical. This was soon followed with reports of a possible multi player trade in progress and another free agent signing possible before the night was out as well.

The trade turns out to be Angel Pagan to the Giants for CF Andrés Torres and RP Ramon Ramirez.

Finally they also signed RP Frank Francisco to a 2 year deal worth $12M pending a physical.

Hopefully next year the Mets can bring the cake.

all it took was me calling him out on an earlier thread, Knog piling on, and BAM, moves out the wing wang.

Now go get Rasmus for Murphy somehow!

pretty sure Torres is going to be our leadoff batter and everyday CF. Very strong defensively and that’s exactly what the Mets are looking for there…

.260/.340 8 HR 20 SB is pretty much what we can realistically expect from him…

Not sure yet. I think Torres is a good backup cf and could hold down the position but would not surprise me to see Murphy moved for a cf.

So, I guess they really weren’t too high on Pagan.

Jeeze, I walk away for a couple of hours and the Mets pick up 3 pitchers and a CF.

    Just signed F. Francisco

Yeah, I went to work expecting the only news of the night to be something about Pujols, but I finally get over to the computer and see that Sandy’s been a busy busy man. I like these moves. And f*&k Pagan. Glad he’s gone.

OK, now we know that the crop report is in, and the sitting back is over, and it is time to buy buy buy.

since they are obviously open for business, let’s see if they can make a few more dominos fall.

    so, what else is there?

    - get a C?
    - get a better starting CF, pushing torres to 4th OF?
    - the biggie, add a SP (potentially upgrading over someone currently here).

so assuming they still aren’t looking to trade any of the top few prospects, I peg the guys likely to be going (or IMO should be on the list) as Murphy, Pelfrey and Parnell.

no idea what they can bring, but if it beefs up at C and SP, then I will be very happy.

and even happier when havens wins the 2B job!

According to what I saw on hot stove tonight, I don’t expect them to be looking at a catcher.  Better than fair chance we’re looking at Thole/Nickeas.  But I wouldn’t be surprised to see a deal for a minor league catcher that has promise b/c they admitted there’s no depth there.

      We really, really need SP.

the SP really could be quite different if the manage to convert Pelf into something else, and somehow bring in a new SP via a trade.  And of course, some expensive lefty WC.

Honestly, who the hell knows what we would get out of a rotation of :

        Santana
        Neise
        Dickey
        New guy TBD
        gee

Not quite the Phils, but potentially solid enough to keep them in games.

wouldn’t that be a shocker if coming out of ST, it was actually the offense that was going to determine how competitive the team is going to be?

And IMO I think this is the year Neise finally takes a leap forward.  I always loved his stuff and potential.  Just a gut feeling here.

Not to throw ice water in your crotch, but we’re really hoping that Santana is going to serviceable.

Even if you bring in Young, that’s no sure thing at all.  Maybe they can stretch out some one, but let me tell you, that rotation scares me big time.

serviceable would be an improvement over much of last year.  And I did saw we have no clue what to expect.

I don’t really want to see Young again.  Better to pick up someone else from outside that isn’t such damaged goods.

On a minor league deal, Young is still excellent option. He was very good in his brief time here…
