Reyes had his press conference to introduce him to Miami and he thanked the fans for supporting him through the good and bad and thanked the Mets for giving him an opportunity to play Major League Baseball multiple times.
He then said how he was impressed with how Miami pursued him. Specifically that they went to see him a minute into his free agency and how the Mets never really made an offer. Overall he said all the right things to mostly what was New York media questions (Where is the Florida media by the way?) one of them being that in the end “this is a business.” and once the Marlins reached his magic number of 6 years $100M he signed and not until that time.
Good luck Reyes except whenever you play the Mets.

Some players that doesn’t matter. Jose wants to feel wanted/liked. That’s his personality.

Fascinating is #Mets r talking with suitors seriously about Ike Davis. #Rangers, #Pirates need 1B. Tex in particular is known to like Ike

If Mets trade Ike Davis too,
they might as well close up shop. Fact is: They don’t have that many
likeable players in fans’ eyes.

An unwatchable team that nobody likes. Good luck with the revenue.

I’m not even referring to
this Ike report, but seriously, is there a more tone-deaf franchise in
sports? Dodger Stadium east, etc.
JOSE REYES: Like I said, they showed they really wanted me here.
12:01, those guys are crazy, 12:01 because they want me here? That’s
why I’m here today, because like I said, they showed me a lot of love,
and I have to make a decision.

No.

i don’t have a problem shopping Niese. For now he’s just serviceable and I’m not sure his ceiling is so high. If they could get a few pieces, including one or two with high upside, they have to at least put their toes in the water.
I do like his guts, though. He and Gee impress me with their ability to rebound from bad innings (unlike Pelfrey).
I don’t see the benefit in shopping Ike b/c I can’t see a great return coming for an unproven guy who just missed most of a season.

Just catching up after work. Shopping Niese, OK. Listening maybe on Ike, doesn’t cost anything to listen.
This to me has all the earmarks of Sandy and his boys now fully knowing what they have in the cupboard after seeing them perform for a year. With this knowledge he’s now ready to consider all pieces as chips for which he has a better first hand knowledge of what an equitable return for those assets would be.
I don’t want Ike to go and Niese could be replaced but I think it is great to see Sandy work his craft now that he knows what the talent pool truly is.

Fredo speaks! – it’s a business…
well, yeah. “These are the lives we have have chosen for ourselves..” true words spoke by another great Miami resident.

Fredo…hmm. Are you going to kiss Reyes on the lips?
BTW Why are you taking Reyes’ departure personally? Why are you so bitter about it? Reyes would have been foolish to turn down Miami’s contract.

Hey GG, nah I’m just having some fun. It was the best thing for him to do for himself and his family. The dollars were to big.
It does crack me up this boo hoo routine he’s pulling today about not feeling wanted. Gimme a break. When A-Rod wanted to stay with the Yanks what did he do? He went against Boras and picked up the phone and called Cash directly to re-ingite talks. If Reyes really wanted to stay or hear an offer from the Mets he could have manned up and called Sandy imo.
I just went for the g-father references tied to another Miami character. I thought about going Scarface as in “you know what a Hassa is Jose?” or “did you ever even exist at all?”. Just having some fun in the face of all the sky is falling crapola I’ve read at other places. Just crazy.

BS on the “they loved me”. It was all about the money. always was. And maybe some leaning toward wanting to go to Miami due to location.
all the wining and dining and love would have meant nothing if their best offer was 5/85. and sure as hell they would have shopped that all over (including back to the mets).
And nonsense that “the mets never made an offer”. I find it hard to believe in the conversations with the agents the mets limits weren’t put out there. And like the note says above, once he got that 6th year (that the Mets supposedly said up front they would not do) no real reason to go back to them.
Did Sandy just not want Jose? Maybe, but much more likely IMO he wanted him, but only up to a certain contract amount.
But, bottom line, he is gone and I don’t care a hoot about him anymore. Much more interested in looking at future moves to improve the team.
And don’t trade Neise. guy has legit stuff, and I bet is about ready for it to all click.

I heard Sandy’s explanation of what transpired Friday night through Saturday afternoon. He said they had the framework of a deal to the point where he thought they just might get it done. Miami came right in and topped it.
Reyes says there was no offer. I’m beginning to wonder if his agent conveniently didn’t tell Reyes about the Mets proposal, took it back to Miami who promptly trumped it – then told Reyes about the Miami one only. I’m sure Reyes winds up in Miami anyway but that ‘they never made an offer’ statement has one or the other lying.
Either way, it’s done. Might be the best deal we couldn’t make. Time will tell.

Ya know one of the comments was “they showed up with a Miami Jersey with my name printed on it”. Ya know what the Mets had many printed with his name on it, not hard to do. He wanted the money and a different situation. If I was him I would be all over it. Hour plane ride home to the DR, lots of cash and a opportunity with a team on the upswing.

haz, you raised something I thought of the other day. One of the selling points on Miami was the whole south beach party scene. Well, one of the knocks (rumors?) about reyes for years was too much partying. Will be interesting to see if that part is true!
though it looks now like Hanley may not be around to cause trouble with him.
quick other thought. If they do trade hanley for prospects and don’t sign anyone else of note, how much better are they really?
MetsFan4Decades
12/8/2011-2:45am at 2:45 am (UTC -4)
Hard to partay every night unless he leaves his wife and kids behind in Long Island.
Well, they just picked up Buehrle and last I looked they were still in on Wilson.
The knock originally was even if they signed Reyes and Pujols, they still had questionable SP. Adding Buehrle helps. Adding Wilson would be a plus.
Losing Hanley? IDK – ’11 was his worst year, right? Who knows what type of numbers he puts up this year. I’m hoping he stays there, and his pouting affects his play on the field.

i dont like being lied to but that is exatcly what sandy alderson did to me and many other disapointed mets fans . or should i say former fans . how dare he tell us he tried to sign reyes when the the truth was he never tried to begin with ,only now when he cant lie anymore does he finally admit he never offered reyes a contract . is this the kind of man we can trust? if frank cashen were around and wilpon didnt jump into bed with bernie things would be different but they are not . i havent been this down on the mets since they traded tom teriffic seaver .well good luck mets your going to need it , but your not going to con me or break my heart anymore , i have had it. so now sandy can go on telling all the lies he feels like.-former fan

sorry you feel that way. But Sandy isn’t the Mets. The players on the field are.
and he pretty much did what eh said. He wanted reyes to come back, and had budget parameters that he would offer. Once the marlins blew past that, he left. Pretty straight forward.
And this “no offer” stuff is blown out of proportion. So what he did not write it on official letter head. He discussed with the agent, who knew pretty much exactly what they were prepared to do.
All players leave eventually. Just need to find some new favorites.

I guess your definition of “tried” is different than mine. My understanding was that there was an effort made in conjunction with Greenberg to try and meet what Reyes wanted. Both Alderson and Greenberg have said as much. So there is that. If losing a player makes you stop being a fan then how much of a fan could you have really been to begin with.
Hope you eventually realize no player is worth giving up on your team.

Oh totally agree, it was great. I just can’t believe all this mourning by Mets fans still many days after the fact. Maybe since I accepted that he was gone ’round about this past June so I’m past it. I don’t know, it’s just me as I’ve gotten older I don’t get all wrapped up once a players moved on of his own volition, It’s not like Seaver where they traded him away at a time when controlling players was far less costly and you could see Seaver was visibly upset and choking back tears at leaving. Reyes moved on his own after the Mets were kicking around up to 90M for him. I don’t blame him for taking more it was the right thing for him. But this harping amongst many in the fan base just because the offer wasn’t officially made in writing, please it’s comical and absurd to me. I root for the uniform, if a player doesn’t want to be here and takes more money and leaves then he’s in my rear view mirror and thanks for the memories.
Did you hear Sandy today when asked by Kevin B how far short he fell on Albert Pujols. He said jokingly his offer was 225 and a box of chocolates. Great stuff, imo.

Get ready for this to be a recurring theme all season. Whenever Reyes does anything positive in a game, whenever the Mets get a poor performance by their leadoff hitter, whenever the Mets get a poor performance by Rubin Tejada, the lunatic side of this fanbase is going to explode with all this whiny ridiculous drivel. Twitter especially has become a nightmare of ignorance, irrational whining, self-pity, declarations of “I’m done with this team” every 10 minutes without actually leaving as a fan.
If someone’s gonna whine about this event and say that they’re done being fans of the team, I wish they would just leave already. Get out so the real adults can talk about sports.

MF, I found Sandy’s crack quite funny. Then again, I am a sarcastic (aging quickly) sense of humored snarker myself. And yes, too many fans are going way too far into the pity party punch.
And Haz, I agree. A team can wine, dine and sleep with the guy around the clock, and if another GM walks up, punches him in the head, kicks his dog and insults his mother, but offers $20,000,000 more on the deal, guess who the player signs with?
it is ALWAYS about the money 1st.
I also did not care that much. Jose was fun, had his flaws, and there are other players on the team to root for. One guy leaves, it just means another guy gets a chance.
And right now, they are 2 SPs away from being at least respectable/competitive (think, like through June last year) in 2012.
