Draft Dodged

The Mets passed on their Rule V selection, probably because relief pitching is what was most abundantly available and the events of a few nights ago negated any opportunities there.  Also, the Mets now have  39 slots full on the 40 man roster, and teams like to leave at least one slot open for wiggle room should the need arise.

They did lose Rhiner Cruz, who was taken first overall by the Houston Astros.  Cruz was originally signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2003 by the Detroit Tigers, and signed as a minor league free agent with the Mets in 2007.  Last year he went 2-1 with a 2.77 ERA with High A St Lucie, and 3-2 with a 4.14 ERZ with 7 saves at Double A Binghamton.

Right now they’re at 39 but they’ve yet to add Rausch or Francisco, so at least 1 person has to be dropped, perhaps a few more if they add more players before the season starts.  Carrasco, Herrera, and Schwinden are all possibilities on the pitching side.  They might also try to sneak Armando Rodriguez through waivers.  Lutz, Satin, and Baxter are possibilities for position players.

In the minor league phase of the rule 5 draft, the Mets lost pitcher Luis Rojas to San Francisco and Hector Alvarez to Toronto.

Rojas has spent the last 2 seasons in Savannah.  Last year he was 1-5 with a 4.87 ERA and was one of the least important pitchers during the Sand Gnats great season and playoff run.

Alvarez has spent 4 years in the organization, the first 2 in the Venezuelan Summer League, the next year in the Dominican Summer League, and last year in the Gulf Coast League.  He has never hit better than .249 or slugged better than .358, both of those happened in 2010 in the DSL.
