A Look At Where The Newest Members Of The $100M MLB Players Club Rank

NOTE: Updated 12/11/2011 to correct the omission of Los Angeles Dodgers CF Matt Kemp & his $160M contract.

Jose Reyes and Albert Pujols received the 30th & 31st contracts of a $100M or more ever to be handed out in MLB. Making them members of the exclusive $100M MLB Players Club though Pujols was already a member being only the 2nd player (the other being Alex Rodriguez) to be in the exclusive club list twice.

Pujols latest contract ($254M) ranks 2nd only to Alex Rodriguez who heads the list at $275M. Reyes ranks 27th on the list. Reyes is the 4th shortstop to join the $100M MLB Players Club. The other 3 are Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter and Troy Tulowitzki.

Prince Fielder many believe will be the next player to join what soon may be a not so exclusive club.

*** Since the last update to this post back on 12/11/2011 2 players have been added to the $100M club. They are Prince Fielder with a 9 year $214M contract and Ryan Zimmerman with a 6 year $100M contract extension.

**** Updated again on 10/25/2012 to add 3 players. Matt Cain with a 6 year $127.5M contract, Cole Hamels with a 6 year $144M contract and CC Sabathia and his 5 year $122M contract.

Looking at that list of those who have had that 100 MIL + contract for a while, how many are actually value for that dollar?  Without looking at the stats, you can eyeball not many…..

IMO, the 8-10 year contracts are just insane.  Yes, Jeter’s was well worth that money.  Anyone else on that list though?  ARod’s is obviously going to be a problem.  Mauer’s might be but he certainly hasn’t started off giving any production for that value.

Those shorter in duration are still questionable.  I believe Beltran’s – even with the injuries – broke even.  At least he was signed for that money for his prime years.
Werth?  Don’t think he was worth it up front, let alone for the duration.
Howard?  He starts off with that contract on the DL, and is being paid big bucks now when his stats indicated a steady decline.

The SPs on the list equaling value for the dollar are even worse.  Remains to be seen on Lee, Sabathia but Wells, Zito, Santana?  I don’t think so.

I’m still LOL at that Reyes contract with the way it’s back loaded.  You have to believe Loria either doesn’t plan on owning that team for the long run or thinks he can start trading off these stars if they don’t get him to the promised land.
