This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty: The I’ll Be At Today’s Holiday Party At Citi Field” Edition 12-13-11

In a couple of hours I will be off to cover the Mets Holiday Party at Citi Field.

The Mets  are inviting 100 youngsters from Queens public schools for lunch and a visit from Santa’s proxy and his over sized elves!   The man behind the Santa beard will be none other than Mets second baseman (?), Daniel Murphy. He will be joined by his “Elves”- starting pitcher, Jonathan Neise and utility man, Justin Turner.

Daniel will be joining the Mets Santa fraternity that includes, John Franco, David Wright, Mike Cameron, Mike Pelfrey, John Maine, Jeff Francoeur, Kris Benson and his unforgettable wife,  Anna !

I will hope to have video along with interviews up throughout the day.

And don’t forget that tomorrow The New York Metsalong with both  SNY and New York Cares are teaming up for the 5thannual Mets “Warm Up” Holiday Coat Drive Wednesday, December 14 at Citi Field.

  • Fans donating one or more coats will receive a voucher redeemable for a pair of tickets to a select Mets game in April 2012 and a coupon to receive 15% off regularly priced merchandise at the Mets Team Store on December 14 only.  Season Ticket Holders who donate coats will get 20% off regularly priced items upon showing their Season Ticket Holder ID card.

  • Coats will be collected at the Seaver VIP entrance of Citi Field between 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.  Fans may use parking Lot B (Entrance 8) on the north side of the ballpark off Shea Road.

And with that said… HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!

Mets alumni celebrating a birthday today includes:

Mets outfielder from ’62-’65, Joe Christopher is 76 (1935).

Resever catcher from ’68-’69,J. C. Martin is 75 (1936).

Mets middle reliever from ’67-’71, Ron Taylor is 74 (1937). After Ron retired from baseball he went to medical school and became a doctor. He was the team doctor for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Utility infielder from the ’93 season, Doug Saunders is 42 (1969).

The New York Mets signed free agent first baseman/outfielder, Kelvin Torve of the Minnesota Twins on December 13, 1989.

The New York Mets signed free agent outfielder, Rodney McCray of the Chicago White Sox on December 13, 1991. Rodney will always be remembered for running through a right field wall to make a catch against ex Mets third base coach, Chip Hale when he played in the minors.

The New York Mets traded reserve outfielder, Chuck Carr to the St. Louis Cardinals for minor league pitcher, Clyde Keller on December 13, 1991.

The New York Mets released reserve first baseman/outfielder, Kelvin Torve on December 13, 1991. In two seasons with the Mets, Kelvin hit .239 with 11 hits and 2 RBIs in 30 at bats.

The Mets drafted back up catcher, Kelly Stinnett from the Cleveland Indians on December 13, 1993.

The Mets drafted reserve catcher, Charlie Greene from the San Diego Padres on December 13, 1993.

The New York Mets signed free agent reserve outfielder, Ryan McGuire of the Montreal Expos on December 13, 1999.

The Atlanta Braves signed utility infielder, Kurt Abbott of the New York Mets as a free agent on December 13, 2000.

The New York Mets signed free agent middle reliever, Dave Weathers of the Chicago Cubs on December 13, 2001.

The New York Mets signed free agent outfielder, Roger Cedeño of the Detroit Tigers on December 13, 2001. Unfortunately Roger’s Mets reunion wasn’t as productive as his first stint with the team. Roger came into spring training out of shape, and both his speed and hitting diminished evaporated along with the money that ownership sunk into him.

The Mets drafted reliever, Henry Owens from the Pittsburgh Pirates on December 13, 2004.

All Mo Vaughn wants for Christmas is a lifetime supply of Godiva Chocolates !
