Link: The 1962 expansion New York Mets were losers, but were loved

Mark Tomasik of TCPalm.com takes a walk down memory lane in this article remembering those lovable losers of 1962. It has some nice quotes from Al Jackson. A nice read. – Link

Little before my time. But my Dad being so happy NL baseball was back in NY – and he could once again root for the NY NL team while he continued hating on the Yanks…is the reason I’m a Met fan today.

    too old for me too.

dirty little secret, the first game I went to as a kid (guessing about 1969?) for my birthday was a Yankee game. Not sure if my dad was a Yankee fan at that point, but if he was, my older sister (fanatical in the early 70s) converted him.

It was nice reminiscing. Thank you NJ.

When the Dodgers and Giants moved west I became angry with the NL for deserting New York and found myself gravitating to the Yankees. Since they were the only game in town I visited Yankee Stadium whenever I could find the finances to afford a ticket (my parents were poor at the time). After all if Red Barber the iconic Dodgers announcer could switch to the Yankees then so could I. When the Mets were born I still found that I rooted for the Yankees but the Mets were fun and gave me a chance to boo the Dodgers when they came to town. The 1962 Mets scored 617 runs a mark not broken until 1969 but the 1962 Mets allowed an incredible 948 runs. As I look back if I had remained a Yankees fan I would have had quite a bit less agita over the years. I attribute my transference from a Yankees fan to a Mets fan to my youthful stupidity. Of course if the owners back then were like the Wilpons I probably would have remained a Yankees fan.

BTW I had seen Roger Craig come up as a Dodger and with fellow rookie Don Bessent pitched the Brooklyn Dodgers to a Double Header sweep. Craig was actually a serviceable pitcher with the Dodgers for a short period of time.

Jay Hook was studying to be an engineer and could explain the physics behind the curveball but just couldn’t throw one. He also had the straightest fastball I’ve ever seen.

Would love to be able to go back in time and catch some of those old Met games at Shea Stadium. Would also love to live in a city like New York where baseball is always going on and I could catch the Yankees and Mets on a regular basis.

Cool website. Haven’t been to Citi field yet but bookmarked this for future reference.
