He is Mr. Met for that decade. In the 2000 NLCS when the team put him on their shoulders, I started crying like a baby. Then my buddy called me crying about the same thing. He deserved that moment more than anyone. He was the one guy that stuck through all the crap in the early nineties and continued to promote the franchise with a smile on his face.
Congratulations to John Franco and since we’re on the topic of relievers there was the customary argument with insults flying over at MMO over the Nationals signing Brad Lidge. Since I signed up for the MLB Extra Innings Package last year I was able to see Lidge pitch for the Phillies on more than one occasion and it was obvious that the injuries had taken its toll on his fastball. Lidge no longer threw hard but instead threw slider after slider. If the fastball doesn’t return to its former glory then all previous stats on Lidge are no longer applicable. He did have some success with his revised repertoire but that may change as the league grows accustomed to the “new” Lidge.
I’m beginning to think a couple of those posters are Joe D’s relatives. Can’t understand why that site allows such nonsense.
Not a doubt in my mind Lidge’s injuries and age have caught up with him. I posted 2 sentences on that opinion and Bayonne went on to call me:
‘…HYPOCRITE with the book keeper’s visor and change dispenser around her waist’…
I feel the same way. Had they signed him, great, had they not, no big deal. And that money is better saved for a back up CF or on another SP.

I would really like to see a SP. Depth is very thin. If Johan isn’t ready – which is a very real possibility – I suppose Schwinden (sp) is next.
But what if there are 2 injuries? I only see Batista as a spot starter, nothing long term.
Just who exactly are the 7/8 guys on the depth chart?

I’d like to see Young and another get signed. Davies, Harden, Penny… Maybe Duke. It is certainly not an impressive list, but with Santana as he is and the odds that another one of the starters goes down for a little while, best be prepared for the worst.

I guess you’d have Schwinden, Olsen, Batista, Hefner, and Owen down there as depth. Doesn’t sound great, I hope they add a Davis, Duke, Dick Hardon, Brad Penny type on a MiL deal. Maybe Ben Sheets.
I’d say there’s a possibility we see Familia or Harvey near the end of the season, possibly even Mejia if he’s got his arm strength built up after TJ. Maybe one of the innings eater types like Collin McHugh or whoever this year’s Chris Schwinden breakout is (Brandon Moore, Mark Cohoon, Dylan Owen et al).

I’m not all that familiar with Hefner. Which goes to show you the depth down there right now (guys who can step in, in April if need be), is not all that great.
I expect to see one or two of those ’4 arms’ make a debut in late season but that doesn’t help much if we need 2 arms to step in in the first half.
There’s still time to sign an arm or two. I have to wonder if they’re waiting until a couple of weeks into ST to see where Santana is at. Very risky, IMO.

I still expect to see a couple more guys brought in. Young likely, but not sure if they will bring in another on a ML deal.
MMO is the Maury Povich of blogs. I just go there to see how you guys attempt to interact with these jerks but you would get further arguing with a brick wall.
They can’t even debate. They say their crap and if they are challenged in any way they hide until the next thread where they repeat the same crap. There is no respect for other posters and their opinions and there is no attempt to gain any knowledge. It is their opinion, their hate, their paranoia and if you don’t follow that line of thinking then you’re an idiot.
Probably has to do with donations the site receives. If Bayonne give $100 and I give nothing, who should stay? I would make the same decision probably but usually it it only a short term solution.

I can say speaking from some personal experience where I was involved that Joe D has not allowed money get in the way of doing what he felt is right.
Joe D has done a lot to clean his site up. these last few months. He removed the shoutbox which he saw as only being used by a very small number of ppl that ended up making fans afraid to even enter and share a thought.
He has put comments into moderation more and more and it has had an effect in toning down some the more uglier comments you would find from time to time.
Try not to let a very small minority get in the way of the overall enjoyment of a good fan site.

I wondered about that shoutbox….
Wouldn’t it have been more sensible to ban those hurling personal insults in that shoutbox then to shut it down for everyone?
I read his reasoning on that – not enough resources to police it – and I can sympathize with that. But from what I was reading, those making that shoutbox a nightmare are mostly the same ones name calling and personally attacking some posters.
Shutting that shoutbox down was kind of like throwing the baby out with the bath water.
I wonder too if it’s not the fact that Joe D. actually agrees with most of their points – minus the personal attacks, of course.
Came across this photo taken at a Carlos Delgado Extra Bases Celebrities Night back in Nov 2011. Now with the Caribbean Series about to begin P.R. could sure use a lineup that is stacked with names like these.

Deserving, IMO.
4th on the all time saves list, 276 of them coming in his 14 years as a Met.
Congrats to John.
