Bob Klapisch of NorthJersey.com tweeted this morning that the Mets are close to signing Josh Lewin as the replacement to former Mets game day radio voice Wayne Hagin. If that is accurate or not remains to be seen but whatever the case here is a bit more info on Lewin’s background.
Josh Lewin is quite the renaissance man. His experiences cover a wide gamut he is an author, columnist, TV & radio play by play, radio talkshow host and singer/keyboardist. Here is a more detailed breakdown.
- Author: “Getting in the Game” & “You Never Forget Your First”
- Columnist: The Sporting News (2001-2004), FoxSports.com (1998-2000)
- TV Play-by-play announcer: MLB on FOX (1996-current), Texas Rangers (2002-2010), NFL on FOX (1999-2004), Detroit Tigers (1998-2001), (NHL on FOX 1998-2001), Chicago Cubs (1997)
- Radio Play-by-play announcer: San Diego Chargers (2005-current)
- Radio talk show host: Josh & Elf Show 105.3 The Fan (2010-current), Sportsline & Orioles Talk WBAL Baltimore (1994-1997)
- Singer/Keyboardist: Local cover band “Independent George”
During the 2010 ALCS the Texas Rangers announced they would not be bringing back Josh Lewin. In it Rangers Team President Nolan Ryan said “After several discussions over the last few months, the Texas Rangers and Josh Lewin have agreed to end their relationship and move ahead in different directions,“. Soon after Lewin in a good-bye blog post had this to say regarding the parting of ways. “Sometimes relationships just run their course, and it really is as simple as that in this situation.”
Indications were that the Rangers didn’t like Lewin’s style of play-calling. Barry Horn of The Dallas Morning News described Lewin like a “TV variety show host” saying, “Sometimes it seemed as if he were spending as much time surfing the Internet for material as he spent watching the game in front of him. Some viewers loved him for that, especially in the dog days of most Rangers summers. Others could never get used to the shtick. He was a lightning rod.” Horn goes on to say that the Rangers were never comfortable with Lewin leaving to call San Diego Chargers games which meant the Rangers needed September fill-ins.
A few weeks later it was announced that Lewin would join 105.3 The Fan as a Sports Talk show host. Lewin had this to say regarding joining 105.3 The Fan,
“I am at a point in my life where the creative process means a great deal to me,” Lewin says. “There’s no better medium for self-expression than sports talk radio and no audience more passionate than the DFW sports fan. As much as I’m already missing Rangers’ play-by-play, this is too good of a platform, too good of a station, and too good of an opportunity to pass up. It’s quite simply a perfect fit, both personally and professionally.”
Lewin’s style has been described as a “unique blend of infotainment“. Lewin whose Twitter handle is @joshlewinstuff describes himself as a “near-total dork.” He writes, “look! up in the sky! its a bird! a baseball announcer! a football announcer! a wannabe musician! a near-total dork! it’s josh!”
Here is a small video clip of Lewin from a Mets/Braves game recap last September on Fox where the Mets lost 1-0.
