This past hot stove season for Mets fans has been tedious for some , boring for most – and a case to commit suicide for others. There were no big name free agents imported – and the trade market saw us pick up a decent outfielder, Andre Torres and middle reliever, Ramon Ramirez. And yes we also so the departure of one of the most exciting players in Mets history – Jose Reyes bolt to Miami to salsa on the fields of the Marlins new stadium on a daily basis.
But there are some positive stories coming out of Port St Lucie in this early part of Spring Training. Johan Santana has thrown two bullpen sessions – and is claiming to be pain free. Josh Thole has been working with new bench coach, Bob Geren ( a former catcher) on his skills behind the dish, and it seems like this team is going into the season with a chip on their shoulder and a desire to prove the naysayers wrong.
So here are five songs that I think best describe this coming season for the Mets.
1. “Stay Hungry” by Twisted Sister . It’s a classic metal anthem – a rally call if you will.
2. “Rock You Like A Hurricane” by The Scorpions. If Ike Davis , David Wright, Lucas Duda and Jason Bay can either return to form – or reach their power hitting potential , the offense will strike fear into the hearts of the opposition.
3. “Blue Collar Man” by Styx . It’s a blue collar song for a blue collar team.
4. ” It’s Not Over ( Til It’s Over)” by Starship. Nothing beats a good Yogism in a song!
And coming in at number 5, if it turns out that the season plays out the way many pessimistic observers think it will then I think ” Don’t Stop” by Fleetwood Mac is the perfect song to describe the Mets youth movement.
What songs would you include ?
And with that said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!
Mets alumni celebrating a birthday today includes:
Middle reliever from the ’09 season, J. J. Putz is 35 (1977). Putz was a welcome edition before the start of the ’09 season, but a undiagnosed arm injury sidelined him for much of the second half of the season.
New York Mets traded utility infielder, Bobby Klaus, third baseman, Wayne Graham and catcher, Jimmie Schaffer to the Philadelphia Phillies for first baseman, Dick Stuart on February 22, 1966.
The New York Mets signed free agent pitcher, Juan Berenguer on February 22, 1975.
The New York Mets released reserve outfielder, Mark Bradley on February 22, 1984.
The New York Mets signed reserve first baseman/outfielder, Mark Johnson as a free agent on February 22, 2000. Johnson spent three seasons with the Mets, and finished with a batting average of .215 with 8 homers and 33 R.B.Is.
The Montreal Expos claimed reserve outfielder, Endy Chavez of the New York Mets on waivers on February 22, 2002. Endy would be re-acquired by the Mets just before the ’06 season, and he is known for making one of the most famous catches in Mets history.
Mo Vaughn’s theme song for the 2012 is ” Feed My Frankenstein” by Alice Cooper !!!

And baseball is back!
I’ll be happy if all get through ST and enter the season healthy. Right now, looks like we’re only following the Johan-might-not-be-ready story.
If we have the full compliment we expect to start the season with, then how well they do with fences brought in (Wright/Bay), taking the next step forward (Niese), defense (Murph/Duda), bounce back years, BP arms, etc. etc. should be fun to watch.

Yeah, if the full team can actually take the field (and mostly stay on it!) the team will do a lot better than many people are predicting.

Can I say that “Rock you like a hurricane” should be played after every Mets win over Miami this season.
Though how often that will happen is something else all together.

I LOVE the guitar solo in Don’t Stop–really one of the greatest minimalist, understated, awesome rock solos.
“Minimalist and Understated”–there’s a slogan for the 2012 Mets right there!
Better leave out awesome….

Of late I’ve been thinking the lyrics to the Who song “The Music Must Change”. Not a sports anthem but great lyrics and somewhat applicable imo. As In:
Deep in the back of my mind is an unrealized sound
Every feeling I get from the street says it soon could be found
When I hear the cold lies of the pusher, I know it exists
It’s confirmed in the eyes of the kids, emphasized with their fists
Or, this verse like after a mid-summer game:
Sometimes at night, I wake up and my body’s like ice
The sound of the running wild stallion, the noise of the mice
And I wondered if then I could hear into all of your dreams
I realize now it was really the sound of your screams
