Video: MLB Network Examines If The New Fences At Citi Field Will Help The Mets Offense

MLB Network’s “Clubhouse Confidential” takes a look at how moving in the fences at Citi Field should help the Mets offense and also looks at other ballparks around MLB like Comerica Park who also changed dimensions in recent years and the new Yankee stadium.

certainly isn’t going to hurt them.

Especially this year, since the team is built more around power and less around speed. so they don’t really have those triples guys that might lose some bases in a smaller park.

I am really hoping also that the mental aspect (as in, Wright changing his entire approach and rebounding closer to what he used to be as a complete hitter) more than offsets the advantage every team gets.

Besides, not like they turned it into a small park or a video game (Yankee stadium) where pop flies will be going out. It is still on the big side, and may still tip toward the pitcher park side of neutral.

and maybe we get lucky, and the pitchers make more of an effort to keep the batters from hitting so many long fly balls!

Pelf’s gonna get lit up like a firecracker and it’s gonna be hilarious (in a sick way).

Pelf has to be beside himself. “Of all the times to move in the fences… IN MY WALK YEAR!!!” (Cue the forehead rubs, palm licking and deep sighs on the mound…)

Of course in 2010 Pelf barely gave up home runs and he’s working hard and retooling his sinker or whatever. Since he’s basically consistent, the luck involved in fly ball/HR rate for pitchers coupled with a little more confidence in the sinker will hopefully push Pelf back towards a ~4 ERA

No offense, but if being good one year, bad the next is consistent (AKA consistently inconsistent), then that ain’t good. And moving IN the fences is in no way going to assist his HRs given up.

The only pitcher I recall being at least for part of his career consistently inconsistent was former Met Bret Saberhagen.

          3. NJstuckinTX

Consistently Inconsistent for PART of his career… He couldn’t even be consistent in that! heh.

          4. Ceetar

xFIP the last four years: 4.45,4.47,.4.31,4.55

If he has better command of the sinker, that will lower his FB total and therefore his HR total.

          5. NJstuckinTX

If I’m reading this correctly per Fan Graphs…

            Below Average – 4.20
            Poor – 4.50
            Awful – 5.00

Then I don’t think Pelf will be good going forward and the word “IF” shall be Pelfrey’s new mantra. IF he gets control of his sinker, IF he ever gets it together mentally, IF, IF, IF…

I don’t see Pelf with this team next year. Based on performance combined with salary.

          6. Ceetar

Pelf’s role on the 2013 Mets depends mainly on guys like Harvey, health of Dickey/Santana, and ultimately his performance and therefore his price for next year. But that’s next year.

Pelfrey’s periphrials are consistent, but in terms of equating it to what Fangraphs feels is ‘good’ is a different story. He’s outperformed xFIP in the even years, underperformed it in odd years. If he outperforms again he’ll be back to average/slightly good. (Which is incredibly valuable)

The question is really _why_ was he outperforming xFIP? Was it better sinkers and/or adjustments made coming off a poor year? Or just dumb luck? Either way, 2012 was practically the floor of bad luck with HR rate and such, so he’ll almost definitely be better than that.

          7. NJstuckinTX

Well, I hope for the team’s sake he somehow recreates Pedro’s 1999 season. The odds are not in his favor though.

          8. Ceetar

            yeah..that’s a bit far-fetched.

I’m just hoping that it’s an adjustment thing more than a luck thing, and his hard work on his sinker this spring ultimately pays off and he has a decent season. Maybe Ricky Bones can help.

        2. Ceetar

it’s also not his walk year.

          1. NJstuckinTX

It is when the team tells him and his 3rd year arb. eligible salary to hit the road.

        3. gategem

If they move a team to Yellowstone Park I’m sure Pelf would gladly sign a contract with them. :-)

          1. Mr North Jersey

HA! “Way to go there Gategem.” (I should note that was said in my Yogi voice.)

          2. Hazmet

I can see him falling off Ol’ Faithful into a pic-a-nic basket as we speak.

Interesting nugget about how the new Yankee Stadium walls are mismarked.

I think the difference at Citi will be more psychological. Hitters won’t be as intimidated by the dimensions. Of course, that goes for the visitors, too.

    1. Stickguy

I actually believe the concept that visitors don’t care (notice?0, or at least don’t change due to the dimensions. But that it gets into the head of the home team, and that some guys d0 (consciously or unconsciously) change their approach (like Wright). So based on that, and assuming that the changes are overall negative (again, see DW) it should help the home team more.

  3. MetsFan4Decades

It should help the Mets offense.

Don’t think some of those pitchers are going to like it though. Pelf in particular. I’ve read he’s working on that sinker. He’d better do more than work on it.

Dickey thinks it will help him b/c he says he gives up some bloop type hits to the OF – with the fences pulled in a bit he’s hoping some of those that dropped in will then be caught.

    1. trs86

It is really very hard to tell how much it will hurt Pelfrey. It depends on how many flyballs he was giving up to THAT part of the park.

  4. Mr North Jersey

LoL, saw this article and had to laugh.

    Koufax visits Kershaw’s bullpen session

So how long before we see a follow up “Koufax mad at Wilpon nixes him and instead visits Dodgers camp”?
