An excellent read, understand your fandom better

A friend of mine sent over this article this morning, and first off…yes, I am still alive :)

David Brooks wrote an article in 2005 about trying to change his fandom and this could be considered a continuation of that with some reasoning.

Hey, Mets! I Just Can’t Quit You.

I highly recommend the read, and I do believe it makes a lot of sense to all of our Mets brains.

    There he is….

I read this earlier this morning. Love the last two lines especially:

‘I have no choice but to love the Mets. Just as I have no choice but to hate the Phillies. ‘

      words to live by.

Too bad these people don’t have a Helicopter.

      are we surprised? lol

The fact that its capacity is only 37,000 is like saying, “Yeah, we don’t expect to draw too many fans, either.” And 6,000 parking spots is even more of an admission.

The nightmare they speak of on the Dolphin expressway was for a game that only allowed 15,000 fans. I can only imagine what a 7 game homestand withe the Braves and Philles coming in will be like.

I’ve been reading for sometime now that the location of the park was terrible due to the difficulty getting there. In the Tristate dealing with traffic is a daily event but it seems that either it is not for Floridians or that the traffic situation is as bad as advertised.

It’s one thing I guess when they would drive down on a Saturday for a College football game and quite another when your driving down every week night for a 7:10 start time.

Good luck. Nothing can tank attendance like lack of convenience.

Loved reading the comments. Some sounded like you could replace loria with wilpon and not miss a beat!

this one represents a lot of people, and could be a real bad omen for them:

“Waste gas driving around for an hour and a half looking for a parking space? Thanks for the heads-up. I’ll stay home and watch the game on TV.”

But, that is the price you pay for a downtown stadium.

So would it be reasonable to expect Marlin fans take a page from the Dodgers fan book where they quite often leave the game early to avoid the traffic?

Here is an excerpt from an interesting SI article regarding the topic of leaving games early to beat traffic.

“Dodger fans have been disparaged for beating the traffic ever since the team moved to L.A., though their very name — derived from Trolley Dodgers — is an allusion to avoiding traffic.”

It’s a good read I recommend it. There is a nice story about people leaving to beat traffic on the inaugural season of the American League back in 1901.

I have been bailing on the end of games in NY for ages to beat traffic. Especially at Shea, a few minutes made the difference between shooting right out onto the GCP, and being stuck for 1/2 hour trying to funnel out of the lot, then getting backed up heading into the triboro.

“being stuck for 1/2 hour trying to funnel out of the lot”

LoL now that brings back memories.

I learned quickly how to park at Shea (And now at Citi) to not get trapped in the mess.

Marlins games end after 10, that’s well after the average bedtime down there.

Best part of this story was the comments.
Those Miami taxpayers don’t sound too pleased.

“I formed certain internal neural structures associated with the Mets.” Get out of my head! ;-)

Ceetar where are you listening to game? I am listening to braves radio network stream.

        1. Ceetar
