Link: On 50-Year-Old Tape, Sounds of Mets’ Awkward First Steps

The New York Times Ken Belson wrote a nice article remembering the Mets 1st Spring Training game 50 years ago today. As a bonus it has a nice audio clip of the radio broadcast for that game.

    Nice stuff.

On a side note, Mulvey is back with the Mets and looks like Chris Young may as well. No problems with either. Mulvey on a minor league deal can’t hurt one bit and even if the Mets needed to guarantee a major league spot is that really an issue? Send Gee to the minors or the BP, roll with a 6 man rotation… there are ways to be creative and this team has minimal SP depth at best.

Mulvey? Interesting. As you said, we need all the SP depth we can get.
Not that I mind a flyer on Young, but I’ll be surprised if he’s ready to pitch this year. Didn’t he have the same surgery as Santana some 6 months later? Based on that alone I wouldn’t guarantee him a ML contract. I know Gee is only a 5th starter but after filling in last year, early on in the BP, right? And pitching with an injury, I think he deserves a spot out of ST on the big club – unless he flat out stinks.

last I saw I thought Young wouldn’t be ready until at best a couple months into the season?

If that is the case, I’m officially confused as to how he can want a major league contract.

Well, I want to make 200K/year and have a new BMW, but I’m not getting that either.

maybe at this point he is closer, but unless he can show he is fully up to game speed (meaning pitch in the minors) no way he is getting a guaranteed ML deal and a spot on the 40 man roster.

unless you can sign a guy and assign him directly to the 60 day DL?

Wright progressing but won’t play until next weekend at the earliest.

    Anyone surprised?

Bay rockin’ the .000 average 7 games into spring training. barf.

I know you can’t read too much into ST, but come on. At least 1 hit would be nice before opening day!

I really did not want to be as right about this signing as I have been so far. Getting 2 vet bats with splits to platoon would have cost about 1/4 as much without the LT noose around the neck.

Of course, if they had blown the money on lackey instead it might not have been any better…
