David Wright Says About Collins Frustration “It’s OK to be frustrated. But at the end of the day it’s spring training.”

David Wright spoke this morning with the media and discussed his injury with some more detail, his approach to dealing with it and Terry Collins frustrations over the Mets injuries.
Here are some of the things Wright says,

  • The injury was a tear of a rectus abdominis muscle in his left side and it sounds a lot worse than it is.
  • He believes his availability for Opening Day is not in question.
  • Regarding Collins frustrations with Met injuries Wright says, “It’s OK to be frustrated. But at the end of the day it’s spring training. You have to err on the side of caution.”

You can read the rest of what Wright says here.

*** Note: In the article Adam Kilgore of The Washington Post is reported to have tweeted that Wright’s injury is the same one that caused Ryan Zimmerman to miss 60 games last season.

His availability for Opening Day is not in question….
I’ll believe it when I see him out there patrolling third base.

Saw a tweet from Ceetar which linked back to a story last ST on Wright’s pal Zimmerman. Sounds like the same injury to me and Zimmerman wound up with surgery to fix that tear.

Wright described it as an “uncomfortable cramp”. Maybe Zimmerman’s pain threshold is that of a little girlie man lol so he had the surgery.

      1. MetsFan4Decades

        LOL.
I did read where Zimmerman did try to play further in ST last year and apparently aggravated it or made it worse with a slide – or something similar.

        1. Mr North Jersey

We are joking and all but all joking aside I was wondering what level of concern there is with what happened to Zimmerman happening to Wright as well regarding doing something that will make it worse?

          1. MetsFan4Decades

            Good question.
I have no problem with Wright resting it here in ST if there is a real possibility of it healing on it’s own with time.

But just can’t help thinking this might be a waste of time.
I’ll go along with what I’m reading – where Wright thinks he’ll be ready for opening day – until I see otherwise. Just won’t be all that surprised if we learn otherwise….

        2. Ceetar

Yeah, he hurt it in Spring Training, then early on in the season slid and hurt it a lot worse. Then they tried conservative treatment for a while, and THEN they repaired it surgically.

Following that the Nats did some crazy stuff with adjusting Zimmerman’s throwing motion or something that basically didn’t work and let to all sorts of defensive problems.

Yeah, on the one hand Wright is right, but at the end of the day, it’s been three absolutely abysmal injury-filled years, with injuries that at first seem minor and eventually last forever, so I hope Dave understands why Met Nation feels that any hangnail will turn into the 60 day DL.

    1. MetsFan4Decades

      Yeah, that’s been my point.
I’m constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop now and I’m not normally a pessimistic or fatalistic type person.

Hard to think otherwise though after what we’ve lived through since 2009.

Its only ST, until suddenly it is opening day and 5 guys are starting on the DL, and a couple others are useless because they did not have enough time to get ready.

Wright being ready for OD? Of course that has to be in question. It’s barely more than 2 weeks away.

one thing about injuries though, even if it is is to the same areas/part, it is possible to have a much mroe serious iteration (a tiny little tear on the end vs. a big one in the middle say?).

But if nothing else, based on last year, Wright is certainly willing to try and play through it.

also makes you wonder how many guys played with stuff like this in the old days, since they didn’t have the technology (or the inclination) to diagnose the problem?

    1. Mr North Jersey

      This quote by Wright:
“As much as I’d like to be out there and play, I also have to realize it’s the first couple of weeks of spring training and that for once in my career you’ve got to be smart about something and maybe miss a few games here to make sure I’m ready for the season.”

The “for once in my career” part just stood out for me as a weird choice of words for some reason.

      1. Stick

I think this is an admission that he knew he was hurt early last year, but kept it to himself and played through it until he had to shut down with the broken back.

and who knows how many times before that he did the same thing, leading to who knows how many “slumps” where he should have been on the DL or resting?

not that guys can become total wimps and sit for a week with every ache or pain, but using common sense sometimes is better int he long run.

Ah….they’re just all liars, in the world according to Warthen.

          I kid, I kid.

          1. kingman 26

Well, I did read somewhere that John Maine has been unofficially counseling players on how to describe their injuries to the coaching staff…

      2. Hazmet

Or, “For once in my career I realize I may need a new contract deal next year and when I do get healthy I better put up huge numbers to get a good long deal someplace”

I know, sacrilege throwing stones at our beloved third baseman but it would only be human nature to have such thoughts. I wouldn’t blame him.

    OT:

I’m sorry but I just could not help literally laughing right out loud at this:

‘Just stop with your favoritism. Favoritism clouds judgement. I have favorites but i do no let it cloud my judgement.’

    Guess who?
Words of wisdom that are just false in his case. If there is one Met fan that lets personal feelings get in the way of sound analysis, it’s him. He’s the poster boy.

    1. saltygary

You only have yourself to blame :)

Just finished watching the Mets/Tigers game a few minutes ago.
10 innings again, in which Jack Egbert gave up the winning run.
    I’m thinking…who?

I understand that game on ESPN featured the Tigers normal booth guys. Having listened to them for 10 innings all I can say is thank the gods for GKR. It was bad enough I didn’t recognize half these Met kids coming up for bat, especially in a ST game where they were swapped out left and right. Sure could have used a good play by play guy letting me know who was who and what was going on in the field – instead of ‘entertaining’ us all with restaurants reviews and family stories.
    Ugh…..

This just in: somewhere Giuseppe Franco has pulled a hammy in an act of unity with the blue & orange…. j/k – who’s next?

    1. saltygary

Crap, now I’m gonna have to watch some GF video’s on youtube. I miss those so much.

      1. Hazmet

lol, i thought i was the only one.

Nice work on the premiere entry yesterday. Good read, I was going to comment but I was too fried by the time I got home.

        1. saltygary

          Thanks!

Random: Jose Reyes has only played in 4 more games than David Wright this spring training.

So much writing about Jose having too mesh with the his double play partner in Miami yet he’s only played in 4 games? Wonder if something’s already wrong? Watch he plays tomorrow against us finally and lights it up.

    1. MetsFan4Decades

Really? That doesn’t make much sense – unless the 4 games he’s played in were the only 4 not played against the Mets. I just assumed they were holding him out against the Mets on purpose.
I’m predicting they’ll be trouble in paradise once they get going.

      1. Hazmet

Yes indeed, most likely a nothing but I felt like stirring the pot. He played in a game on MLB network over the weekend and looked bouncy as ever. Just curious though in looking at his ST stats he’s barely played.

  8. saltygary

Kong, you watchin the UVM game?

    1. kingman 26

      You bet I am!

      What a fundamental team!

      UNC next!

Well, it is nice to kick Pat Knight’s bully ass!

      1. saltygary

I hate the play in game, at least the new one puts the team in as a 14. Having a play in only to face the #1 is BS.

        1. kingman 26

Yeah, I do agree, but this may be UVM’s weakest of their 5 recent tournament teams.

          1. saltygary

            I think you are right.

          2. kingman 26

They play AMAZING fundamental, hustling, team ball, but they really do not have anything close to a standout star.

          3. saltygary

Especially now that USF is starting their play in for the 12th seed, I am getting a little more annoyed about UVM’s placement. So UVM wins their tourney and earns the auto-bid but the 9th Big East team gets a play in and can earn the 12th seed. Doesn’t make sense. Auto-bids shouldn’t have to do a play in.

I only caught about ten minutes total but from what I saw they were setting up some great plays. They probably should of scored 10 more points.
