The New York Mets today signed 27 yr old SS Oswaldo Navarro to a minor league contract. Navarro last appeared just briefly in the majors in 2010 with the Houston Astros.
Navarro with only 23 career at bats in the majors is a career minor leaguer. In 6 seasons at AAA he has hit .260/BA, .332/OBP, .336/SLG. – Link
Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork notes that “Navarro has played 593 games at shortstop, 240 games at second base and 112 games at third base.”

So, tejada more hurt than reported maybe?
Makes sense I suppose, because best as I can figure none of the SS prospects in the system that look like they have promise are even close to AAA level. So, someone has to play SS for the Bisons, and in NY if Tejada can’t go.
So unless you think Valdespin is viable and ready, or you want to see that other stiff that is in camp, the signing makes sense even if he is useless with the bat. I hope he at least is a slick glove man!

At least their hedging their bets, if Tejada’s injury turns out to be a longer type – although this morning, doesn’t sound like it.
I thought Valdespin was more of a 2nd base guy, than SS anymore.
I’m wondering who starts at 3rd, If Wright doesn’t make open day? I suppose Turner…..

I think they just start calling out numbers deli style. “Who has 45? 45? Anyone? No? OK, 46…”

I’d still like to see Valdespin given reps. I’m not one for coddling the kiddies, especially for this season that does not have the highest of hopes. That said, with all the bodies going down as fast as beer on St. Patty’s day, we’ll probably have to see this team sign about another 2 people per position to insure they can even field a full team!

OT:
Niese looked real sharp through 5 innings here today.
Now if we could only see that from Pelfrey.

Watched the game today.
Niese had a very good 5 1/3 innings.
Couple of the BP arms? Not so much.
I know many believe Herrera(sp?) had success last year using smoke and mirrors and would likely be exposed over time, but for most of his time last year – and ST so far this year – he seems more than capable of being the LOOGY until Byrdak returns. He had another good outing today.
Mets offense is somewhat uninspiring so far this spring.
You know, if Bay could just hit somewhat like the Bay of old this wouldn’t be a bad lineup. So far this spring, he just looks lost. He’s got a few walks but other than that, I’m not seeing anything that gives us hope he’ll be any better than last year. Ralph was in the booth today and commented he’s too far away from the plate, among other things.
If only it were that easy for the problem to be identified, corrected and he’d be back on track. More and more it’s looking like you can file him in the column of regressing almost overnight, at a younger than normal age.

I’ve given up any hope for Bay now. He looks just as bad if not worse as most of last year. Not sure what happened last September, but it certainly did not seem to carry over.
at this point, we may get to the platoon/bench stage by May, and outright release by sometime in July. and I won’t be sad to see him go! Now, when he ends up finding himself with the phils or yanks while leading them into the playoffs, that I would mind!

Well I’ve pretty much been a negative nellie so far this spring but in watching some of the game today Niese does look like he’s done everything to at least warrant the thought that he could take the next step in being a solid starter. Maybe he’ll be capable of making it through a full season for the first time in his career and maybe rack up a good number of wins with the addition of the change up. I also liked Valdespins size, arm at short, and presence at the plate and in the field. He may be young but he at least has the look of a player. I’d like to leave him at short with Tejada down and see what we get. Hell, they made us suffer through a month of Gary Mathews Jr. and Jacobs in 2010 at least give the kid a shot through ST and a month. And last year a good month of the Brad Eamus experience, which I’ll never live down, What the heck.

I have been high on Neise for years and haven’t gotten off the bandwagon. I think he really does have the stuff and mental approach to be very good. I think the end of year fades were a combination of getting injured (the hammy, and recovering from the hammy) and normal growing pains.
hopefully he is ready to take the next step, and the new nose helps!

I’ve been a huge Niese fan from the beginning. I think he can make the next step. The only thing is that his wins won’t be as high as they could be given how terrible this bullpen will be. It still baffles me that people like to say this year’s bullpen will be a strength when they didn’t upgrade much, if at all, from last year’s atrocity.

I’m expecting to see a lot of churn in the pen this year, with new guys stepping in (up?) as the season goes along. Hopefully though the fresh blood coming up out of the minors (like Edgin) will actually be good for a change!
