#mets would like to trade pelfrey. Tough market. But rival exec says, “best thing for him might be to get out of new york.”

As I have mentioned a few times, the Mets are not bound to Pelfrey’s salary YET. While I am still unsure of the deadline for Pelfrey in terms of his contract becoming guaranteed, what I do know is that IF the rumor above is true Pelfrey may not be around to find out.
Obviously I am not foolish enough to think that the Mets would get any return for Pelfrey. Is it possible that a team like the Tigers might throw him in the mix for the #5 spot? Sure. However, I am sure they are well aware that the Mets may release Pelfrey and why trade a prospect and have to pay him the cash. Could the Mets work out a deal where they send Pelfrey and cash to the Tigers in return for a prospect? Why would the Tigers do that? Maybe if they wanted to make sure they got him instead of allowing him free choice if the Mets released him.
Ultimately what I could see happening is the Mets shopping him around this week and if there is no one willing to offer a prospect in return, just giving him his release and saving cash to boot. So who takes his spot? For now I would expect one of the swing guys. However, there could be a guy like Garland available due to the new CBA rules.
Honestly I can’t see the Mets moving forward with Pelfrey looking like he has and owe him the amount he is owed. Should be an interesting week.

interesting to listen to Ojeda and Darling dissect him here in the 4th. I really wonder what a smart catcher and a real pitching coach could do with this guy (say, if he had gotten traded to the Cards a couple years ago.) Seems like a terrible waste of potential.
some team though might take a bite. He was hitting 93-94 on the gun, with some movement.
Time out here for a DUUUUUUDDDDDDDDAAAAAA! Man is a beast.
anyway, Mets will score some runs this year.
back to Pelf, pitching is still at a premium. So, maybe a change of scenery trade to even out money?

I look forward to hopefully seeing many games this season where Ike and Duda Homer in the same game. Fingers crossed.
Interesting on the Pelfrey story. I wonder if a team would actually bite?

I think that cutoff/deadline has passed. Believe it’s either 15 or 16 days before opening day.
We’ll start the season with Pelfrey.
I’m sure they’d like to trade him but who’s biting?

If another team offers something of value, I’m sure Sandy Alderson will consider trading Mike Pelfrey. But if Pelfrey comes out of the Mets rotation, who takes his place? Miguel Batista? I’m not sure he gives you a much better chance to win.
Pelf will start the year in New York, and he’ll probably finish it here too unless he pitches better than he has all spring. Then his agent can have fun convincing other teams he’s worth a multi-year contract this winter.

they aren’t likely to find anyone better, but they might just get similar results for cheaper overall.

There really just isn’t any reason for the Mets to trade pitching. They need pitching, which is why they kept Pelfrey in the first place. (And Sandy Alderson is not an idiot, he’s not swayed by meaningless Spring Training stats)
Yes, they might be able to get similar results for cheaper overall, but it’s the known quantity of Pelfrey that’s valuable. You might get the same results from say Hefner, but there is a much much greater chance that you get _less_. Pelfrey will give you what he gives you. Lots of balls in play. If he can keep the ball down, that’ll be valuable. If it keeps it up as much as last year, it’ll be barely replacement level.

I had to laugh when I saw this tweet.
@AdamRubinESPN
Mets officials were just very candid on outfield situation with media. They WILL have a bona fide center fielder on Opening Day roster.
And how I was so looking forward to seeing Jason Bay play CF.

I was considering the case of Big Poof today and I had a different notion. Our Closer’s are, well, eh. Poof embrace your new role. That’s right, why not, it worked for Isringhausen. Get Poof to buy in and start changing his routine. I’d be interested to see what he could do just airing it out for 1 inning. He certainly has the size to be intimidating if he took to the role. Before we ship him out for pennies on the dollar I say give it a shot.
Imagine if he took to the role and then we had Pelfrey and Mejia in the pen for 8 & 9 at some point with the Harvey, Wheeler, Famila rotation growing into it’s own next year and beyond.

Poof lacks the mental makeup (ie zero) to be a closer.

Not sure you want your closer to be a guy who walks a lot of batters, puts a lot of balls in play and can’t get a stike out.

Dickey would actually be better suited to the task.
