Being sucked into the vortex that is the NY media, it is always easier to focus on everything the Mets organization does wrong.
Having all the players wearing number 8 during batting practice today is everything that is right. Also, by making it a surprise and not having it advertised all week, really exposes the sensitivity and sincerity that the organization has about the situation and demonstrates a desire to not appear exploitative.
Today the Carter family will be throwing out the first pitch and there will also be a tribute to Carter before the game. Some of the Mets greats will also be in attendance for the occasion.
If you haven’t seen it yet, MLB.com has setup a webpage for all things Carter:
http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/mlb/news/tributes/obit_gary_carter.jsp?c_id=mlb
You will see statements from players, coaches, and front office staff. There is also a great collection of great videos that they have compiled.
