This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty: The ” Opening Day Is Finally Here !!” Edition 4-05-12

Yes it is finally here ! Today is a day of re-birth – a new beginning if you will. Today is the start of the Mets 2012 season – a season that most pundits think will be a washout -a lost season if you will. Lets just hope our Mets can prove the naysayers wrong and field a team that can finish above .500.

So here is a oldie but goodie that should put us all in the baseball spirit.

By the way I will be sitting in section 312 – row 8 if you want to stop by and say hi. Please bring beer !

And with that said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!

Mets alumni celebrating a birthday today includes:

Reserve catcher from the ’65 season, Jimmie Schaffer (1936)
One time first round draft pick for the Mets, Lastings Milledge is 27 (1985).

Sadly on this date in 2002,Sheriff Robinson – one of the original Mets coaches passed away.

New York Mets purchased the contract of middle reliever, Butch Metzger from the St. Louis Cardinals on April 5, 1978.

The New York Mets purchased the contract of middle reliever, Danny Boitano from the Milwaukee Brewers on April 5, 1981.

The New York Mets released infielder, Mike Cubbage on April 5, 1982.Cubbage would later on become a coach for the Mets and a curse has even been named in his honor (by me).

The New York Mets sold the contract of utility man, Gary Rajsich to the St. Louis Cardinals on April 5, 1984.

The New York Mets signed free agent middle reliever, Julio Machado on April 5, 1989.

The New York Mets traded starting pitcher, Bruce Chen, spot starter/middle reliever,Dicky Gonzalez and minor league player,Luis Figueroa to the Montreal Expos for relief pitchers,Scott Strickland and Matt Watson and minor leaguer, Philip Seibel on April 5, 2002.

The New York Mets claimed utility infielder, Marco Scutaro on waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers on April 5, 2002.

The New York Mets signed free agent outfielder,Gary Sheffield of the Detroit Tigers on April 5, 2009. Yes he hit his 500th home run as a Mets, and yes he was a good citizen for most of his tenure with the Mets. But when the Mets failed to trade him to a team that was in the pennant race, the Gary Sheffield that we have all come to know reared his ugly head.

Mo Vaughn will be trying to sell access to the “Mo Zone” !!!

Is there any truth to the rumor that the size of the Mo Zone was built to a seating capacity of one grown Mo?

I’m excited. Wish I were going to be at Citi today.

Signed: the poster formally known as MetsFan4Decades.

Shortened my name as per request b/c it was dinking with the latest comment box.

For those still missing Reyes, saw this tweet from Heyman:

JonHeymanCBS: as @Joelsherman1 wrote, jose reyes answered “No chance” to me when i asked if he missed the mets. at least he was smiling.

    Time to move on.

I never thought Argenis Reyes was that good to start with.

      1. srt

        LOL….forgot about him.

      2. Hazmet

That would make a great “Daryl” like chant when Reyes shows up for a series. Start chanting “Arheeeyyynis”.

    2. Stick

that was always a 1-sided relationship I think.

And the whole home-grown business was overblown.

Agreed there is a lot of reasons Jose picked the Marlins other than the 1 billion they paid him. The guy wants to live the party life, be the not only the king of the city but the entire culture that is Miami and be closer to home. He was done with the Mets. Time to move on. I loved Jose but I don’t miss him a bit.

For some reason, I don’t really care all that much. Maybe because for the last 3 years he was pretty much a non-factor? And I expected him to leave anyway.

Or maybe it was so many Abs flailing at a bad pitch and popping up in a big spot?

That is one thing that really makes me laugh at that “other” site. The core that spend so much time bashing Wright for being unclutch are also in love with Reyes, who makes Wright seem like Jeter in comparison of “clutchiness”.

          1. srt

Non rational hate on all things Wright for that ‘Core’ over there.

If they’d look at the numbers and look at all factors both on field and off, Wright is a lot closer to a franchise type player than Reyes ever was.

          2. Stick

come on MF, you know that numbers don’t matter. And wright only puts them up when it doesn’t count (and couldn’t possibly have anything to do with even having the team in position to win late in the game).

Just use your eyes lady. Get your head out of your spreadsheet. You can just “feel” that DW is a loser with a capital L.

Numbers? Numbers? Numbers are for people who don’t understand the game. The game is only for old people who refuse to accept non-traditional stats OBP, WHIP and other “Saber” stats.

          4. Stick

I played the game in HS damnit, that means I know more than the rest of you, and a bunch of guys that work in MLB for a living! Arrrrgggghhhhh.

          5. srt

            lol….That’s right. I don’t have a valid opinion b/c I never played the game.

    3. Prismo

Jose has found a new team to lose embarrassing games on. The Marlins are going to flop big time this year, enjoy!

      1. NJstuckinTX

        Amen.

The Mets are in first, I told all of you naysayers! “Waaa, the Mets are a last place team… waaa, the Mets have no pitching… waaa, Reyes is gone”…

But you didn’t believe me. First Place you pessimistic jerks!

  5. Darknova

I’ll be in section 531 with my green Thole shirt. Finally real baseball!
