It was a perfect day in Mets land yesterday, with the organization going 5-0. We know what happened in Flushing, let’s check out what happened everywhere else:
Buffalo 4, Rochester 2
Chris Schwinden got his 2012 season off to a good start. He pitched 5 innings and gave up just a pair of unearned runs, striking out 4. Three different relievers combined for the final 4 innings, surrendering just a single hit. At the plate Bobby Scales, of all people, led the way with 3 hits, including a pair of doubles. Vinny Rottino had 2 hits and drove in 3 runs. Jordany Valdespin played centerfield, had 2 hits, and scored 2 runs. With Kirk Nieuwenhuis out of the picture, at least for the time being, it’ll be interesting to see how often Valdespin finds himself playing centerfield.
Binghamton 2, Akron 1
Darin Gorski was phenomenal in leading the B-Mets to their first win of the season. Gorski’s changeup was on as pitched 6 shutout innings, giving up 1 hit and 3 walks, while striking out 7. He also picked off a runner off of first. Robert Carson let up a homerun, but he also struck out 2 in an inning of work. Josh Edgin walked one but also produced three ground balls to shortstop to pick up his first save of the year. The B-Mets had just 4 hits in the game, but that was enough to win. Jefry Marte tripled and scored a run. Matt Den Dekker was 1 for 2 with a walk and a run scored.
St. Lucie 4, Bradenton 2
Chase Huchingson took the ball pitched 6.2 shutout innings, allowing just 3 hits and a walk while striking out 5. Adrian Rosario followed for 1.1 innings and struck out 3. Daniel Muno got things started from the leadoff spot, collecting 3 hits and coming up a homerun shy of the cycle. Darrell Ceciliani drove in 2 runs. Wilmer Flores was 0-4; three games into the season he’s hitting .071.
Savannah 7, Augusta 1
Florida alum Alex Panteliodis made his professional debut giving up only 1 unearned run on 4 hits through 5 innings of work. He walked 1 and struck out 3. Tyson Seng pitched 2 shutout innings and then T.J. Chism and Jared West followed up with a scoreless inning of their own each. Aderlin Rodriguez committed another error in the field (his 5th of the season), but he once again redeemed himself at the plate with 2 hits, including a 3-run homer. All 9 batters had at least 1 hit. Brian Harrison had a pair of doubles and an RBI. Dustin Lawley had 3 hits and scored 2 runs; after 3 games he’s hitting .545. Travis Taijeron also had 2 hits and an RBI. Catchers Cam Maron and Albert Cordero both drove in a run.

I wonder too how often Valdespin will play CF and what their thoughts are regarding the position they eventually see him playing. I’m thinking they’re just hedging their bets, wanting him to be able to fill either need if the call him up.

I agree. also may not be sure about 2B in 2 ways. 1) will someone else block him (Murphy obviously, or Havens if he ever can stay on the field!) and 2) can Spin play it well enough himself.
So, being able to play CF gives them an extra “out” to getting him on the field, and it makes him useful as a bench guy.

I think they see his athleticism and potential and want to try to get him on the field anyway possible. The future at second base is still a mystery, but if he doesn’t ultimately win that position in the long term he’ll have some useful versatility as backup.

should have put my comment about Gorski here. A month or 2 of starts like this to prove AA is not a challenge, and you have to consider him for a call-up. Certainly looks ready, and he is not a young kid.

maybe not a call-up to the big leagues, but definitely a mid-season promotion to AAA would be warranted. I still don’t know why he didn’t get a promotion to AA last year, because it was definitely warranted.
