Last Night on the Farm – 4/10/12

Last night on the farm, St. Lucie rolled to its fourth straight win in the Florida sun, while the bats for Bisons, B-Mets, and Gnats were as cold as the weather in upstate New York.  Meanwhile, top-pitching prospects Matt Harvey and Michael Fulmer both took the hill.  Let’s take a look:

Rochester 5, Buffalo 3

Matt Harvey made his second start of the season on a frigid afternoon in western New York.  He lasted 5 innings, giving up 2 runs on 7 hits, while walking just 1 and striking out 4.  He left the game with a chance to get the win, but Jeff Stevens let up a 3-run homer in the 6th.  Val Pascucci homered for the 3rd time this year.  Jordany Valdespin, Josh Satin, Vinny Rottino, and Zach Lutz all had 1 hit each.  Valdespin was once again in centerfield.  Lutz is hitting .300 early in the season and if he can keep himself from getting injured over the next few days he could be making his big league debut this weekend if the Mets are forced to put David Wright on the DL.

Erie 6, Binghamton 1

Mark Cohoon made his return to Binghamton and threw 5 innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits and taking the loss.  Robert Carson made his second relief appearance of the season and gave up his second homerun of the season.  After getting some nice reviews after his first appearance of the season Brad Holt gave up 2 runs on 3 hits in one inning of work.  He struck out 2, but he also walked 2.  The B-Mets managed just 3 hits all night.  Matt Den Dekker, Jefry Marte, and Josh Rodriguez all singled, and that was it.

St. Lucie 6, Charlotte 2

After dropping the season opener, the Lucies have now won 4 in a row.  Angel Cuan started and surrendered just 2 hits and a walk over 7 scoreless innings.  Taylor Whitenton struck out 3 in 1 inning of work, but gave up a run on 2 hits and a walk.  Adrian Rosario also gave up a run during his inning of work.  Wilmer Flores was 2 for 3, showing signs of breaking out of his early-season slump.  Cory Vaughn also had 2 hits.  Vaughn, Daniel Muno, and Alonzo Harris all doubled.  Robbie Shields hit a triple and drove in a run.  There has been no word as to why, but Cesar Puello has not played since the second game of the season last Friday.

Rome 3, Savannah 1

Teenager Michael Fulmer made his season debut.  He did well early, but couldn’t get out of the 5th, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks in 4.2 innings, striking out 4.  Marcos Camarena was good in relief, pitching 3.1 allowing just 1 hit while striking out 6.  The Sand Gnats could only muster 3 hits and could not take advantage of 3 Rome errors.  T.J. Rivera had 2 of those hits; he’s hitting .348 early while 6 other guys in the Gnats lineup last night are hitting at .200 or lower.  Aderlin Rodriguez had the other Gnats hit, a double to keep his average at a stellar .208.

If Wright goes on the DL, I wonder if Lutz is the first called up. I hope so. Been waiting to get a look at this kid for awhile now.

I would guess so. He has so few healthy stretches, you hate to waste one!

He is on the 40 man I believe, and they really need someone that can play 3B since they don’t see to want to move Murphy, and Turner shouldn’t be starting over there.

Agreed, it’s time for Lutz to get his shot, especially since Terry doesn’t seem all that interested in putting Turner at 3B. Even if David goes to the DL I can’t imagine a broken pinky keeping him out more than 2 weeks, so there’d be little point in moving Murphy over there for that short period.

Well, I certainly hope it is Lutz and not slapping Turner at 3B. Turner is nice and all, but he is a bench player at best, and I still hold to the thought that this season will be one of growth for the Yutes. If Lutz can show his stuff and turns out to be something special (and healthy!), it puts the Mets in a good spot come the day after they exercise Wright’s option… just sayin…
