Mets Statement On David Wright’s Pinky

From the Mets Media Relations Department.

“Last night, David Wright jammed the fifth finger of his right hand. An X-ray revealed a small fracture at the middle joint of the finger. This is a non-operative injury. The finger will be splinted and reevaluated tomorrow. David can return to baseball activity as tolerated.”

Ok so far no need for amputation …. Yet

So…..I’m assuming it’s all a matter of when the swelling goes down, coupled with when he can bend the finger and swing a bat.

Wonder how long they’ll ‘monitor’ it.
Dang, I really wanted all hands on deck for that Philly series.

I don’t want to overreact in terms of DL if not needed, but do it if this is likely to be at least a week. Bench is just not strong enough (especially with a couple of guys starting that are less than stellar on D) to carry a dead spot..

I have no real idea what needs to happen, but I think you have it right. Just hard to see that in less than say 5 days?

So, obviously he misses today’s game. Then tomorrow off, so have someone from AAA waiting in Philly, and make a pre-game decision before Friday’s game. that would be almost 4 days since the injury, and 3 days since treatment (splint, drugs). That should be enough time to have a pretty good idea how it is responding.

I’m hoping if it shows no improvement by Friday that they’ll just DL him. What’s the point of playing a man down for a week? Yes, the DL will cost him 2 weeks so I can see them stretching this as long as they can before DL’ing him.

Dang….MLB really needs to change it’s rules some. An injury like this might benefit from a full week’s rest but the only 2 choices in that scenario would be to play a man short for that week or lose the player for 15 days.

a 7 day DL does make sense, at least for non-pitchers. I know they have a shorter one in the minors, but I forget the details.

and yeah, they should have a much better idea by Friday.

I think they put one in this season but only for concussions.

            That’s what I thought too.

Not sure why they can’t just have a 7 day DL across the board. I’m sure it’s got something to do with some mindset of taking advantage of it, although I can’t think of how.

maybe wanting to have a guy avoid a string of LHPs or something by hiding him on the DL for a week?

I would imagine it’s about the minor league players too.
