Last Night on the Farm – 4/17

Rains washed away the Savannah game, but other than that it was all sunshine on the farm.  Observe.

Buffalo 4, Lehigh Valley 1

Chris Schwinden was the star of the night, tossing seven innings giving up one run on four hits with a walk and a strikeout.  Jack Egbert and Fernando Cabrera each tossed a shutout innings of relief and Zach Lutz was 2 for 3.  Pat Misch, remember him?, took the loss for the Iron Pigs.

Binghamton 10, New Hampshire 6

The B-Mets rode a six run third to coast to a victory over the Fisher Cats, though Kevin Mulvey came in to relieve Colin McHugh (5IP, 1 R, 4H, 2BB, 6K) and did his damnedest to make it a game again, giving up four runs in an inning and a third.  Six B-Mets had multiple hits and 2B Josh Rodriguez connected for his first home run of the year

St. Lucie 6, Charlotte 1

Gonzalez German went 5.1 innings, giving up just one run on two hits while walking three and striking out five.  John Church, Adam Kolarek and Adrian Rosario combined for 3.2 innings of shutout relief.  OF Cesar Puello returned and went 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI, and Wilmer Flores went 2 for three with two doubles and two RBI.  Danny Muno also added an RBI and two runs scored in the effort.

Savannah @ Rome (Suspended)

The Sand Gnats were up 2-1 in the third when the rains came.  They’ll pick it up this afternoon.

I see Zach Lutz is off to a good start.
I’ll be curious to see what they do with him if they decide to re-sign Wright.

too bad he doesn’t play LF.

I guess he could end up traded, but not sure what kind of value he would have. bench guy maybe?

I guess best bet this year is to let him do as absolutely well as possible and then see what his value is at the end of the season. If there isn’t much trade talk then you start trying to make him into a utility guy I guess.

They really need to find a way to get him some big league at bats to up his trade value, which is why I was confused when they went with Satin as David’s replacement if he had to hit the DL. He’s not much of a bench candidate b/c he can only play third and first and he’s not that great defensively at either one. If them don’t have to put him on waivers to free up space on the 40-man they’ll have to look to trade him this off-season, but you can only get so much for him if he’s an aging AAA star with an significant history of injuries and few or no MLB at bats.

I’m sure Philly could use him. Polanco is 36 and not much of an offense threat anymore. He’s been declining and is off to terrible start.

          Lutz for Hamels. LOL.

Lutz is way too cheap and young for the Phils. then again, so is Wright…

I think they should trade for A Rod.

Chris Schwinden’s been pretty steady so far. Good to see.

Good performance by Schwinden, especially considering Lehigh Valley is off to a great start, it probably puts him in line to for a spot start if necessary. However, only 1 strikeout is a bit of a concern.

Also, Robert Carson finally had a good relief outing last night.

Meh, Schwinden. Pretty sure he’s a terrible pitcher.

        Correctamundo!

        He’s a poor man’s Misch and a really ultra-destitute man’s Figgy.

      2. Bryan

He is a terrible pitcher, which shows how important it is for all 5 starters to stay healthy, because he’s the guy at least until Carrassco/Beato/Mejia get healthy and stretched out.

Just read that it wasn’t rain that suspended Savannah’s game, but a power outage at the stadium in Rome, weird.

Ha! I read that last night too. Was wondering who didn’t pay their electric bill. :-)
