Last Night on the Farm – 4/19/12

Last night on the farm there were four lefty starters and two were phenomenal.  Let’s find out which:

Lehigh Valley 8, Buffalo 4

After starting the season with 8 shutout innings out of the pen, Jack Egbert gave up 5 runs (2 earned) in the 8th that cost the Herd the game.  Before that Garrett Olson started and gave up 2 runs over 6 innings.  After playing the day before at second base Jordany Valdespin was back in centerfield, and at the plate he was 3 for 4 with a walk and his 2nd homerun of the season.  Val Pascucci hit his 5th homer of the season.  Adam Loewen, Bobby Scales, and Josh Satin also contributed 2 hits each.

Binghamton 6, Portland 0

Darin Gorski was sharp once again pitching 6 strong innings allowing just a single hit and 2 walks while striking out 4.  Elvin Ramirez is making waves himself this April.  After 2 more scoreless innings and 4 strikeouts Ramirez has pitched 7.1 scoreless innings with 14 strikeouts and just 7 base runners.  Armando Rodriguez also added a scoreless inning of his own.  Travis Ozga led the charge offensively with 3 hits, including a homerun.  Jefry Marte returned to the lineup with a couple hits.  Eric Campbell also had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s.  Pedro Zapata drove in 2 runs, but is still hitting .160.

St. Lucie 1, Palm Beach 0 7 innings

This game was called one batter into the top of the 7th, but the Lucies are the beneficiary of what can be assumed was rain (or possibly a power outage).  Chase Huchingson pitched the first 5 innings, striking out 3.  He has thrown 17.2 scoreless innings to start the season.  Taylor Whitenton pitched a scoreless frame and got credited with the save despite giving up a leadoff double in the 7th right before the game was called.  Only 5 hits for the Lucies, but that was enough.  Wilfredo Tovar had 2 of them and Daniel Muno had a double, his 5th of the season.  Robbie Shields and Wilmer Flores had the other 2 hits.

Hickory 7, Savannah 2

A 6-game winning streak came to a screeching for the Gnats as Alex Panteliodis gave up 4 runs (1 earned) in 4 innings.  Tyson Seng’s followed by giving up 3 runs on 6 hits in 2 innings.  T.J. Rivera was held hitless for the first time this season, and to make things worse he committed 2 errors.  The Gnats had more errors (3) than they did hits (2).  Brian Harrison and Luis Nieves each had a single.

Nice start this season so far for Gorski. He continues to impress.

Gorski is my latest MiL mancrush. I stick my myprediction that he is the closest one to being ready (a finished product) to get called up if a need arises.

Completely agree. He does seem to be closer to ready than Harvey or Familia and I hope the organization doesn’t keep him in AA longer than necessary if he keeps pitching like this. I think he knows who he is and isn’t trying to be anything that he isn’t so I don’t think he’d be phased by a big league call up.

Although at the moment I imagine Schwinden and Hefner are in line ahead of him if they’re pitching well, and then if they get healthy Mejia, Carrasco, Young, and Beato. But by June or July I think Gorski could definitely be in the conversation if a need arises.
