Last night on the farm Matt Harvey and Domingo Tapia combined for 19 strikeouts! Elsewhere, the B-Mets bullpen bailed out Greg Peavey and St. Lucie had things cut short by rain for the second straight night. Let’s take a look:
Buffalo 6, Syracuse 4
Matt Harvey started and ended up with one of his better lines of the season, pitching 6 innings, and giving up 3 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks, but striking out 10. Harvey got his first win at the AAA level. At the plate Harvey had 2 hits and an RBI. Jordany Valdespin, Val Pascucci, and Rob Johnson had 2 hits each. Pascucci and Johnson both went yard.
Binghamton 7, Portland 5
Well, Greg Peavey’s scoreless streak is over after surrendering 5 runs on 8 hits in 3.2 innings. However, the bullpen combination of Erik Turgeon, Robert Carson, and Josh Edgin pitched 5.1 shutout innings to help the B-Mets win. Edgin struck out 2 in 2 inning to earn his 2nd save of the season. Josh Rodriguez led the way with 3 hits, including a 3-run homer. Matt Den Dekker, Jefry Marte, and Pedro Zapata all had 2 hits. Marte doubled twice and drove in 2; he is now hitting .397/.459/.576 with 9 RBI’s in 10 games.
Palm Beach 2, St. Lucie 0 1 inning
Yohan Almonte gave up 2 runs in the top of the first and the Lucies went in order in the bottom half before the rains came. The teams will attempt to finish the game today.
Hickory 5, Savannah 2 13 innings
Jared West let up 3 runs in the 13th, but the Gnats deserved the loss anyway after being outhit 13 to 5 and failing to take advantage of 3 Hickory errors. Domingo Tapia started and gave up 2 runs on 6 hits over 5.2 innings. He walked only one while striking out 9! Estarlin Morel and T.J. Chism both pitched 2.2 scoreless innings and both struck out 6. On offense Brian Harrison doubled and 4 other Gnats hit a single and that was it.

Good start for Harvey. Needs to limit those walks though. 2 hits? He’s got a better bat than Nickeas. Speaking of which, there has to be a better option than him for back up catcher down there. I see Johnson with 2 hits. Just wonder what his or May’s game calling abilities are.
Yikes, Peavy. Edgin continues to impress.

Defensively the Mets don’t have a better option than Nickeas in the organization. Even after his 2 hits Johnson is batting .222/.250/.361, so there really are no options to go to behind Nickeas unless there’s an injury.

Yes, I was afraid of that. I think we have on legitimate catching prospect somewhere in the low minors. Can’t remember his name.
If we’re doing any trades at the trading deadline, here’s hoping it includes some kind of legitimate catching prospect that’s not years away.

Albert Cordero is still in Savannah and off to a slow start, he’s the best they got but is still years away. Cam Maron is also getting on the radar but he’s also off to a slow start in Savannah. Francisco Pena could get back on the radar with a good year with the bat this year. He’s at St. Lucie.

Codero was the one I was thinking of. Thanks.
All 3 sound too far away – even if they do pan out – to give us any help by next year.

Also, it will be tough to find a team willing to trade away a good-looking catching prospect, but I completely agree that if you’re sellers at the deadline you have to try some help at that position.

honestly, I feel catcher is the least important position to have in the minor leagues.
I’d rather have a good defensive veteran backstop than a young catcher with a really good bat
