Last Night on the Farm – 4/23/12

Binghamton and Savannah were off last night so there are only two games to speak of, let’s get to it:

Buffalo 5, Lehigh Valley 1

Dylan Owen stepped in for Jeremy Hefner and made the start, giving up just 1 run in 4.2 innings.  More importantly Owen hit a homer, continuing a trend of Buffalo pitchers fairing well with the bat after Matt Harvey had a 2 hit game his last time out.  Josh Edgin followed Owen in making his AAA debut.  He gave up 1 hit while striking out 3 in 1.1 innings.  Brad Holt struck out the final 2 batters of the game to earn the save.  The Bisons had 5 different players with 2 hits, including Josh Satin and Zach Lutz.  Lutz is hitting .333/.425/.556 in his first 19 games (dude knows how to hit).

St. Lucie 10, Fort Myers 6

Andres Torres began his rehab assignment and while he only played 6 innings that was enough time to get 4 at bats.  Torres finished with 3 hits, 2 stolen bases, and 1 RBI.  Cory Vaughn and Cesar Puello each had 3 hits.  Puello doubled twice and drove in a run while Vaughn homered a drove in 3.  Richard Lucas and Blake Forsythe had 2 hits each; Forsythe drove in 3 runs.  Wilmer Flores was 1 for 3; he has an 8-game hitting streak and is hitting .433 in his last 10 games.  D.J. Carrasco also made his first rehab appearance, pitching a scoreless first inning on only 8 pitches.  Gonzalez Germen followed with his first rough outing of the year.  He lasted only 3.1 innings and gave up 6 runs, walking 4, striking out none, and allowing 3 homeruns.  Kyle Allen combined for 4.2 scoreless innings and 8 strikeouts while the bats overcame a 3-run deficit to give the Lucies their 10th consecutive win.  For the season Kolarek has walked 1 and struck out 15 in 9.2 innings.

what to do with Lutz. That is the question.

Unless they have to send Ike down and put him at 1B, he is land locked. Too bad he can’t play LF!

They wouldn’t be playing him in LF for Bay anyway. He’s a RH and don’t look now but Bay is not the one hurting the team.
      .240 .316 .460 .776 118 OPS+
.290 .353 .613 .966 last 9 games with a hit in 8/9. (0/1 pinch hit appearance is the only game he didn’t get a hit.)

Even more amazing as I look at Bay’s game logs… he has a hit in all but 3 games that he has started with 5 of his 12 hits being extra base hits. The guy MIGHT be coming around a little.

          he still screams platoon.

overall, .627 OPs vs. RHP, and 1.256 (an .818 slg%!) vs LHP.

And I don’t know how on BP to do splits for a period, but they have gotten a lot of LHP pitching lately haven’t they?

I know for the year he has 9 starts vs. RHP and 5 starts vs. LHP, so they are seeing a lot of LHP.

and (SSS alert!) if you take out his .500 BA vs. RH RP, vs. RH SP he is putting up a snappy .182/.270/.303/.573

Platoon the guy, and the team will be better off.

With who? For now they got no body and his splits vs LH are still better than the alternatives for now. Not only that but the problem you face is that as soon as you do that and they bring in a LH reliever then you can’t just slot him in between Duda and Davis again. For now Bay isn’t close to being what is hurting them.

    Edgin, love to see that.

I am starting to envision a scenario where there is a changing of the closer guard by the ASB (FF either traded or demoted), with the back end of the pen being Edgin, Parnell, rauch and Ramirez (who for some reaosn I think is really going to turn it around). Anf FF if he is still around will be inthere someplace too.

Byrdak as the loogy, and maybe a Hefner type as the long man.

or good old DJ as the swing man. I keep forgetting he is still under contract.

Was just going to comment…..I guess we’ll be seeing Torres and DJ back sooner rather than later.

Maybe a healthy DJ will be worth something. He’s got to be better than Batista as the long man.

Agree. Torres should only need 1 or 2 more rehab games and if he’s hitting the ball the way he is there’s no sense wasting those at bats in the minors. DJ would certainly be a better option as the long man than Batista has been.

wonder if Torres’ leg will hold up this time? At least in the minors they can take it slower. If he comes up here, needs to be going 100% and not holding back on it.

He did steal two bases last night, so I have to assume he’s going close to 100% in his rehab.
