Last Night on the Farm – 4/29/12

Last night on the farm, every team in the organization won, including the big league club, as we all know.  Anyway, on Sunday afternoon Zack Wheeler finished out his April on a high note, Wilmer Flores’ hitting streak came to an end, Cory Vaughn’s streak of power continued, and a very important person made his season debut in a big way (and a less important person also made his season debut).  Let’s learn more:

Buffalo 8, Rochester 2

Dylan Owen went 7 strong innings giving up 1 run while striking out 7.  Brad Holt struggled through two-thirds of an inning, giving up a run that moved his ERA to 6.75.  Vinny Rottino and Bobby Scales led the way with 3 hits each and 2 doubles each.  Brad Emaus made his Bisons debut playing third base and went 2 for 3.

Binghamton 7, Erie 1

Zack Wheeler earned his first career AA win after going 5.2 innings and giving up just 1 run on 2 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 6.  Wheeler’s is rocking a 1.75 ERA after a month.  Armando Rodriguez pitched 2 scoreless innings to lower his ERA to 1.29.  Reese Havens made his season debut and quickly tried to make up for lost time.  In his first official swing of the season he launched a 2-run homer.  Havens finished the game 3 for 4 with a walk.  Matt Den Dekker was 2 for 5 with a double, triple, 2 RBI’s, and 2 strikeouts.  Jefry Marte was 1 for 3 with a double and a walk.

St. Lucie 5, Fort Myers 1

Gonzalez Germen got roughed up in his last outing but bounced back nicely here giving up just 1 run in 7 innings while walking none and striking out 7.  Kyle Allen and Adrian Rosario each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.  Daniel Muno, Robbie Shields, Cesar Puello, Juan Torres, and Wilfredo Tovar all had 2 hits.  Cory Vaughn homered for the 3rd consecutive day.  He has 5 homers total with 4 of them coming in his last 7 games.  Wilmer Flores was 0-4 with an RBI, which ended his 13-game hitting streak.

Savannah 9, Lexington 3

Marcos Camarena hopped into the rotation in place of an injured Logan Verrett and pitched 5 shutout innings for the Gnats.  Savannah’s bats have been inconsistent (to put it kindly) this year, but they were hot today with 8 of 9 starters getting at least 1 hit.  Dustin Lawley led the way going 3 for 3 with 2 walks.  Brandon Brown and Aderlin Rodriguez both had 2 hits, including a double, and 2 RBI’s.

Good night all the way around for the farm.

Good to see Wheeler had a solid start.
Along with that very good to see Reese Havens back on the field. Crossing my fingers this kid stays healthy enough this season to finally get a good long look.

yeah, nice to see all the teams doing well. and lots of goodpitching performances.

Wheeler seems to just need to dial in his control a bit to be pretty much ready. Starting to wonder if he could make the rotation out of ST? Or if not, an early season call up. Not expecting him this year, especially if he doesn’t have to go on the 40 man in the off season, but shouldn’t be too much long.

and it is exciting to think of calling up a guy like this as a replacement, instead of a Schwinden!

nice to see havens pick up where he left off. So frustrating he ran into this problem with the muscles. He would have been entrenched at 2B right now if he hadn’t missed so much time.

so, I wonder what happens? if he stays 100% issue free for the next 2 months, playing every day and putting up big #s, do they roll the dice and try to trade Murphy and turn 2B over to him (even if they are still in the playoff race, which I expect them to be?). If they could get a good return (such as a useful SP), or fill a gaping hole, then I would pull the trigger.

have to say though Murphy has been doing OK at least at 2B, but it would be nice to see him generate some power. so far, he seems to be very castillo-esqu!

Or do they trade Davis, Stick?

I’d have to think long and hard about trading Ike.
I know he’s struggling right now but he’s got more power than Murphy. And his defense at 1st base? We have no one right now that comes close.

I like Murphy, I think he’s looking better at 2nd base right now and I’d hate to lose him. Just not sure what you do with him if Havens is the real deal and they re-sign Wright.

I just wonder if they say “OK we have Ike, Murphy and Davis that can play 1B, lets trade Ike for ….”.

          1. Prismo

Wow, Ike AND Davis can play 1B? Impressive.

I don’t see it. and not for Murphy. If they get blown away with a trade offer? Then it could happen, but if he picks it up that much, I don’t see the Mets wanting to move him.

I think Murphy would end up being the odd man out in any scenario, since he is the weakest glove.

but again, it comes down to who they have to replace him, and what the return offered is.

          3. Stick

oh, you also forgot to include Duda in the list of guys that could be moved to 1st.

          4. trs86

            Whoopsie, lol Duda.

Well, one game at AA ain’t much.

No way they trade Murph to replace him with Havens until the guy stays healthy for at least 80–100 games, if not an entire season. They need Murph’s offense badly right now.

As for Ike, his value is pretty low right now.

Unless they get overwhelmed by someone with an MLB starter or a Wheeler-type piece, I think they should roll with what is working for a while more.

      SIGN ROY HARVEY!!

      That would be OK though.

      1. trs86

Yeah, I am not saying they trade Ike today. I am thinking more about during the off-season if it looks like Havens is going to play 2B and all the other dominoes fall.

        1. Prismo

You guys know Ike had 3 hits yesterday, right?

When his average is back over .280 I’m going to rub it in your faces that I stood by him while both of you wanted him traded or sent down to the minors!

          1. Stick

I said give him through May before going to the minors. Looks like he might pull out of it up here though, which is a good thing.

          2. trs86

Uh.. did you read what I said? LOL. I am saying this off-season if Havens is ready for 2B and other dominoes fall…. What is this MMO?

          3. kingman 26

Prismo, there’s a long road for Ike between right now and .280.

Can you also wait until his OBP and SLG are over .300?

            Thanks!

          4. Prismo

Well he raised his SLG 31 points last night to .299, so that won’t take much.

        2. Stick

obviously Havens staying healthy and showing he can be a replacement needs to happen. But Wright is the other major domino. If he resigns, or gets moved, it is going to lead to a whole slew of moves.

Real mentioned a few guys that could play 1st, but they are starting to stack up some bats in the minors that play 3B. Kind of like planes stringing out to land, you have lutz, Marte and Flores lined up playing 3B.

If wright signs, those guys need to move positions or get traded at some point. And most likely, the only place to move any of them is 1B.

          1. kingman 26

If Wright continues playing anywhere near this level, i.e. as he did before getting beaned, there is ZERO chance he is moved. None, zilch, nada, zip.

            He ain’t going nowhere.

          2. Stick

only up to the Mets though until the end of 2013. after that, who knows?

the only way I can see him traded next off season (or mid season) is if the team gets some kind of ultimatum ($ figure) they know they won’t go near, but they think some other team will.

I still suspect that mid-year this season they can work something out. But, remians to be seen.
