Last Night on the Farm – 5/4/12

Last night on the farm there were 2 shutouts, and Mets affiliates were on the winning side of both of them.  Let’s take a look:

Buffalo 9, Syracuse 0

Jeremy Hefner, perhaps auditioning for a big league start in the not too distant future, was fantastic.  He pitched 7 shutout innings allowing just 2 hits and a walk while striking out 3.  In 5 AAA starts Hefner has a 1.64 ERA and a WHIP under 1.  D.J. Carrasco followed with 2 shutout innings.  Matt Tuiasosopo was the offensive star going 4 for 4 with 2 homers.  Dustin Martin doubled and drove in 2 runs.  Josh Satin and Lucas May had 2 hits each.

Harrisburg 7, Binghamton 4

With Zack Wheeler on the DL Gonzalez Germen came up from St. Lucie to make the spot start and took the loss with some mixed results.  The good part is that he walked no one and struck out 9 in 6 innings of work, but the bad part is he let up 5 runs on 8 hits and took the loss.  Oswaldo Navarro and Juan Centeno each had 3 hits.  Juan Lagares was hitless but drove in 2 runs.  Reese Havens had the day off and grounded out in a pinch-hitting appearance.

Savannah 10, Delmarva 0

Tyler Pill worked around 8 hits and 2 walks in 6 shutout innings; it helped that he struck out 8.  Jack Leathersich struck out a pair in 2 scoreless frames and Jared West also pitched a shutout inning.  Travis Taijeron continues to hit, going 3 for 4 with 2 RBI’s, ending up a homer shy of the cycle.  Dustin Lawley and Aderlin Rodriguez both had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s each.  This was the Gnats 5th straight win, and they finished the game with only 1 batter in their lineup hitting below .200 (although 3 are between .200 and .210).

I know pitching in the minor leagues is not the same as pitching in the ML but dang…..think I’d rather they try Hefner for that next start than Batista.

Plus….with the way some of our SP have been going, getting out of the 5th inning on some nights has been a stretch. What if one of our starters before Batista pitches has to be pulled early? Batista is the long man. What then?
This BP is already showing signs of wear. Having some of those arms not named Batista going multiple innings or pitching multiple days isn’t helping anything.

I had that same thought, I imagine if someone got pulled early and they had to go to Batista they could bring someone up for Tuesday Hefner or McHugh probably. I’d like to think Batista starting is a one time thing, but he seems like they’ll use him as a starter and bring up Carrasco for the bullpen in a couple days and continue like that until Young is ready.

I also heard a second lefty could be added around Sunday. Possibly Edgin, although Justin Hampson has also been good and chuck james has been Buffalo’s best lefty all year but he’s on the DL.

I sure hope they get another lefty up here sooner rather than later.

I already told you what to expect. 3 max from Batista, then Acopolypse for 3. so basically a double digit deficit by then.’

this isn’t a spot start, it is a BP game. You might also get to see DJ for a 2-3 inning stint (always fun!)

From looking at the schedule, with an off day Thursday, I think they can shuffle to get it lined up to skip that spot in the rotation next time, then have Hefner on target to make the start after that. So IMO they are sacrificing this game starting Batitsta, with the intention of making it a 1-shot deal (unless by some miracle he steps up). Hell, would not be surprised to see the team burn him out pushing as far as he can go, and assuming e sucks (always a fair assumption), dumping him the next day for a fresh arm.

I predicted pre-season that there would be a lot of churning of bodies in the pen, and it is time to start replacing the crap. Acosta and Batitsta need to go. And DJ has to be on a short leash to prove that last year was a (bad) fluke.

Could be the plan. And I certainly hope Batista is only getting one start.
Batista and Acosta? Yeah, that’s a recipe for success all right.
