Last Night on the Farm – 5/8/12

Last night on the farm, Matt Harvey pitched well, the B-Mets gave up no earned runs and lost, and the Lucies suffered a rare loss.  Let’s take a closer look:

Buffalo 3, Gwinnett 0

Matt Harvey pitched 6 shutout innings against the Braves.  He struck out 5 while letting up 5 hits and 3 walks.  Jack Egbert and Fernando Cabrera finished the shutout for the Bisons.  The Herd managed just 5 hits, but that included an Omar Quintanilla homer.  Zach Lutz was 1 for 3 with an RBI in his first start in nearly a week.  Harvey was 0-2, dropping his average to .333.

New Britain 4, Binghamton 3

Mark Cohoon pitched a gem, giving up just 1 unearned run on 4 hits in 6 innings.  Brad Holt helped with 2 shutout innings of his own, but with Robert Carson pitching in the 9th a Jefry Marte opened the door for 3 unearned runs to score, costing the B-Mets the game.  All 4 runs given up were unearned.  At the plate, Matt Den Dekker and Juan Lagares had 2 hits each.  Lagares, Josh Rodriguez, and Reese Havens all doubled.

Brevard County 3, St. Lucie 2

Erik Goeddel had 1 tough innings and took the loss as a result.  He ended up going 5 innings, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits with just 2 strikeouts.  For the second straight game Wilmer Flores had 3 hits, including a double and 2 RBI’s.  Blake Forsythe and Rafael Fernandez had 2 hits each.  Cory Vaughn had the day off after a few hitless games.

Savannah 6, Lakewood 1

Alex Panteliodis had another good start, albeit an abbreviated one.  He lasted only 4 innings, but gave up just 1 run.  Jeffrey Walters and Jack Leathersich both pitched 2 scoreless innings each.  The Gnats pen pitched 5 no hit innings.  Walters has allowed no runs and just 5 hits in his first 10.1 innings this year while Leathersich has allowed 3 runs (1 earned) in 19 innings while striking out 27.  After a few off nights Travia Taijeron got back on track, going 2 for 2 with a double and 2 walks.  Taijeron, Harrison, and Brown all had 2 hits, including a double.  Harrison also added a homer.

For SS, I really don’t see Cedeno as a viable LT starter if Tejada is going to be out a while. Would be interested in giving the quintalla dude a look as a starter, though most likely in the Show he wouldn’t be much better!

And Flores is going to need to make the move to Bingo soon. Take Vaughn with him, and TT needs to jump to St. Lucie, Nice for a change to see guys forcing their way up, but actually being blocked in some cases by other talent that deserves to play too.

Even have a nice stacking of 3B prospects from A+-AAA. Wonder what happens there if they finally extend Wright? Or (shudder to think) do they get seduced by the options, and let Wright go after 2013 figuring they can replace him with young and cheap? Huge question hanging over the club.

Hopefully, Tejada will be back in 15 days. Unlike Thole, who I think will be out quite a while with his history of concussions.

Quintalla…he’s not on the 40 man roster, correct?
Actually, I’m not sure Rob Johnson was so wonder what kind of roster move they made to call him up?
Or am I wrong and he was on the 40 man?

        I found it.
In order to make room for Johnson on the 40 man, they moved Beauto to the 60 day DL. Beauto’s arm problem must be more serious than I remember reading about.

nah, it’s that he was 45+ days in already, so moving him to the 60 man was easy.

The problem with Cedeno is not a lack of talent but an understanding of how to approach hitting in the majors. Cedeno will swing at anything if he can reach it with a crane. My hope is that the Mets hitting philosophy will infiltrate Cedeno’s mind. Over a short period it seems to have worked with Torres.

we can hope for that then.

Wasn’t there already some article implying that he knew playing for the Mets he was going to have to be more patient?

maybe he can be a late bloomer then. though I don’t believe he is as old as I first thought (might still be in his 20s?)

If Tejada really will be ready in the 15 days, that is good. And might as well just go with Turner/cedeno since they are here (or are about to be here) and on the 40 man, since it is what, only about another week (maybe 10 days) at this point.

Did not know Thole has prior concussion issues. It is starting to sound like it could be a longer period. This is not going to be pretty most likely, but cross your fingers.

I saw where Eliezer Alfonzo was released. Not a pretty name but not a horrible player.

saw that name yesterday. He’s a catcher, right? it did occur to me that they should look at him too. Someone has to catch in the system!

teams will a solid, reliable catcher that plays every day and can hit are very fortunate. Mets were spoiled for a lot of years that way.

and I don’t care that much about developing lots of guys. Trade or sign for them if you have to, just get one in!

Mets are kind of at a crossroads with Thole. With Montero and a couple of decent options coming on the market at the end of the year they will have some decisions to make. Hopefully for Josh he gets back soon.

Trade for JP Areciencnennbba from Toronto! Frank F., Bay (we’ll take the whole salary on and he’s canadian afterall) and something else

Seriously though, I think I’d trade Familia for JP. I’d shoot for Travis D first, but JP has power and calls a really good game.

I hope you just hit random keys to type that name.

but yes, I would trade Familia today for an actual good catcher. I know travis is still in the minors so just projection, but hell, so is Familia!

either one if you say they are an upgrade, and someone you can build around.

so sold, now go git ‘er dun.

I still think Lannan is our best bet but we would have to make it worth the Nats while and they may would have to see us as not a threat this year. Unless there is a lot of give and take. I still think they might be interested in Torres and maybe another hitter.
