First and foremost, I want to wish all the mothers out there a Happy Mother’s Day. In my opinion, one day just isn’t enough.
Now I’m going to make you play GM for a moment with our beloved New York Mets.
Today’s Question: Let’s say you could pick up any player in the league, regardless of cost, for an substantial upgrade. What position would you like to upgrade? ….choose carefully.
For the record, this is not who question but a what position question.

Give me another front line starter all day long and three times over until the world ends.
That way if something happens to Santana or Dickey the world does not end.

Absolutely. Santana has been so good but due to other injuries, there are no more backup’s. I also don’t want to see the kids until at least ASB, and that sounds like the plan anyway.

You can’t go wrong with a top-of-the-rotation starter.

I am torn between catcher and SP. But I am going with catcher, even though there are not that many real difference makers. Must be watching Nicky trying to hit every day, and remembering when we had Piazza in his prime!
I am guessing that most people are going to pick the obvious choice, SP. But they still only pitch every 5th game. Though upgrading from Batista to Cain or some such would probably help…

Have to go with you on catcher.
Normally I’d go top of the rotation starter but hoping one of those arms we’ve got down there will qualify for that.

Stick beat me to it. I’d say Catcher. One who can get the best out of the pitchers, keep them calm amidst the storms and provide a wallop of a bat. I sometimes don’t think we appreciate just what Piazza and Carter did for the team. When I see Thole, Nickeas, Snyder, Sasser, and the endless list of dreg catchers this team has had, it makes me realize how spoiled we were to have Carter & Piazza.
And yes, another top line pitcher would be great, but having that every day guy in the lineup is where I would upgrade.

It’s that hour advantage. wait until you move to Seattle. 3 hour difference, you won’t ever stand a chance!
seriously though, I always felt that an everyday guy is going to be more valuable than a SP. Basically, the entire rotation is the equivalent of any other starting position player.

Age before beauty, my friend. ;-P
Yeah, my feelings exactly. Dropping a killer SP into this Rotation would be wonderful (Say Stras or King Felix, thus shifting everyone back) but you’ll still have weaker links in the back of the rotation. Plus, a true C can help raise the pitchers game.

Starting rotation absolutely is the answer.
Teams from the 1960s Dodgers and Mets to the more recent DBacks and Giants have proven that titles can be won with great starting pitching and a simply solid team around the rotation.
Not the only way to win, but I just feel a great rotation at least guarantees a good team.
And frankly this Met group seems to be precisely the type which could grind out enough runs to win with a great rotation leading it.
If I could have one player? Strasburg without a doubt. Put him at the top of this rotation please.
Get it done Will!
