hope this works out, Well, just removing DJ is a plus, even if they didn’t bother to replace him. Carson has pretty much sucked though he has been pitching better lately. So, maybe they can get something out of him.

One thing that bothers me just a bit is making all these decisions based on who is on the 40 man. They do have a few pieces of dead wood (1 less today!) so if there is a clear difference, figure out how to get a better guy onto the roster.

I think we could also see Elvin ramirez and Eggbert in the near future once the merry go round gets up to full speed. And don’t snooze on Edgin, once he gets himself straightened out.

  2. Bryan

Carson has actually been real good out of the bullpen this year, far from perfect, but he has a 1.84 ERA and lefties are hitting an even .200 against him. He is skipping AAA, which could be a concern, but he’s got good stuff and he throws hard, and obviously a second lefty is necessary.

Josh Edgin isn’t ready quite yet, he’s really struggled adjusting to AAA so far, so it may not be as soon as expected but he’ll get to the big leagues. Elvin Ramirez has been real good early on in AAA so he’s a definite option at some point. Pedro Beato is also working his way back. Plus, by DFA Carassco it opens up a spot on the 40, which gives them at least some flexibility.

    1. srt

When you say Beato is working his way back…..do you mean rehabbing or he’s actually pitching now?
Last mention I saw on him, could have sworn it was that they moved him to the 60 day DL.

      1. Stickguy

they did . And I don’t think he is pitching yet. Me, wold not be surprised if he is done for the year or ended up needed to go under the Knife. But hopefully he recovers and makes it back this year.

        1. Bryan

I don’t think he’s done for the year, they just needed the space on the roster. Last I heard he’s pitching well in extended spring training. Of course he can’t come off the DL for a while so he prob won’t start minor league rehab for another week or two.

          1. trs86

Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen said Pedro Beato (shoulder) is progressing and “building up arm strength.”
It’s not clear when the young right-hander will be game-ready. He’ll likely be sent to Triple-A Buffalo first, though. Apr 22 – 11:43 AM

          2. trs86

Jenrry Mejia was slated for a longer appearance when he faced extended spring training batters Friday in Port St. Lucie, Fla. But Mets staff pulled Mejia just into the right-hander’s second inning of work because they sensed he was too excited and overthrowing and “coming out of his delivery,” pitching coach Dan Warthen said.

With Mejia in the final stages of returning from May 16, 2011 Tommy John surgery, Mets officials are being vigilant in ensuring Mejia does not alter his delivery or try to overexert himself.

    1. I love me some Alderson, but DJ, in hindsight, was a horrible signing. Didn’t really like it when it happened but didn’t imagine DJ’d be this bad.
    2. Something had to happen, so I’m glad we can see some of the “kids” vs the old dregs.
    3. Seattle is beautiful. Just saying.
    4. Poor Santana. I wonder what his record would have been had he pitched on a good team…

    1. srt

I was in Seattle once – travel for work for about 4-5 days.
Beautiful area. I know it rains often there but it didn’t the week I was out there. Hope you settle in nicely.

    2. trs86

To be fair to DJ it was not much money to start with. I always said you can cut him with nothing lost. No one expected him to be that bad or if they did could tell the future. He had an ERA under 4 since 2008 until he came to the Mets. Again, not a lights out guy but at 1.25M he should have been servicable.

      1. Stick

agreed. Some people make it sound like he is Sandy’s Ollie or Bay albatross (since he got 2 whole years!), but in reality, he barely got more than minimum wage so was 1 step above a MiL invite guy.

I was not expecting him to even make the team out of ST, so IMO the injury is the only reason he even got a chance (albeit a brief one), since he missed his chance to prove his suckitude in ST.

    3. kingman 26

If you liked Seattle at first glance, you will absolutely love it once you move there.

It really is not only an incredibly beautiful place, but is also a truly great place to live and raise a family.

      1. Stick

Just not hot and humid enough for me in the summer. how could anyone give up that fine Houston weather?

        1. kingman 26

It is SO beautiful there in the summer…75–80 degree days, blue skies, almost zero humidity.

I loved it there so much, I have even loved the rain since I left…makes me think of Seattle.

Maybe the best medium/large city metro area in the US.

        2. Stick

I’ve never been there, but hear it’s nice.

I was being snarky BTW in case you couldn’t tell.

          1. kingman 26

Oh I know; I can recognize your creatively spelled snark at 100 paces.

It really is amazing. I have been to most of the bigger cities in the US and it is hard to think of many which rival Seattle overall.

Denver is cool as is SF, but Seattle rocks. Literally AND figuratively.

          2. trs86

Sorry, I will take Charlotte! :) LOL.

          3. Stick

hey, I don’t think this post had any typos though. So I must get props for that, right?

bad combo of clunky fingers, no particular interest in proofreading, spelling never having been my ‘thang, and an old version of explorer that does not flag typos. So be thankful you can even interpret the gibberish.

Only one of those cites I have been to is San Fran. I did like that a lot. Will have to get up to Seattle some day.

          4. Prismo

San Fran is really nice, I haven’t been to Seattle. And of course I’m biased toward NY and DC. Favorite city in North America still goes to Montreal though, I just love it up there. If it wasn’t for the winters I’d consider moving there someday.

          5. kingman 26

Montreal is really nice. Vancouver and Toronto are too.

          6. gategem

I’m somewhat partial to Montreal since my 2nd and favorite wife was born and raised there. However, I’m truly in love with Quebec City.

  4. SaltyGary

Haha I was only joking last night when I said to DFA him after he gave up the HR. IT was the right move. They gave him another shot and he was completely ineffective.

    1. Stickguy

coming off last year he had a short leach, I just didn’t expect it to be this short! If nothing else, the haters can’t squawk about Sandy forcing “his” guys on us.

Gotta figure if they were willing to move this quick, there are a couple more guys that might not be around long (OK, at least 1, Acosta).

    2. trs86

I wouldn’t be surprised if they were pretty damn pissed at his stunt with Braun.

      1. Stick

cerainly had an impact last night, since Ramon was unavilable. maybe it would have worked out differently with him instead of DJ in play?

but, I still blame this one squarely on Terry for overmanaging (that damned book!). Just leave parnell in for the 8th, and a much better chance they nail down a win.

anyway, this latest debacle got DJ DFA’d, but is it enough to reshuffle again, and make Parnell the 8th inning guy?

      2. kingman 26

        Excellent point.

Sucking AND being aggressively stupid is a pretty tough combo to overcome.

        1. Mr North Jersey

          Ha!

  5. John Vittas

I can’t blame Sandy for dumping Carrasco but it is not consistent with how he has handled the bullpen this year. If he is going to DFA Carrasco after just 3 games, why is Manny Acosta still on the roster after 6 weeks of getting shelled? And why is Francisco still closing (although that’s more Terry’s call)? You either have to show patience or consistently pull a quick trigger. The Mets are now eating a million dollars after Carrasco pitched a perfect 9th inning last night, rebounding after allowing the HR.
So whose the brilliant call-up? Double-A lefty Robert Carson, who has never pitched above AA and has never even had success in the Minors, let alone the Majors. This is his first year with a good ERA but his WHIP is still high (1.36).
The Mets had southpaws Chuck James and Justin Hampson pitching well in AAA, both with Major League experience, and both were passed up. They also had 3 dominant righties in Jack Egbert, Fernando Cabrera and Elvin Ramirez. The Mets have gone with one righty the past two years, they did not need another lefty that bad.
I know Carson has good stuff and I hope he proves me wrong, but I would much rather see him in September when the Mets are out of the race than mid-May when they are only 3 games out of first place.
Lastly, the part that bothers me most is that Carrasco’s Mets legacy will be as the guy who hit Ryan Braun and caused the Wright-Collins dispute. DJ is one of the kindest human beings in the game and wouldn’t harm anyone intentionally. I talked to team pastor during Spring Training and asked him who the most faithful player is, and without hesitation he said DJ Carrasco. Take that as you may, but why would he be hurting anyone after he just battled back from an injury himself?
Just some ideas, let me know what you think.

    1. Stick

I don’t really think it is for sure he hit braun on purpose, but even for a devout guy, that is just part of baseball, so i would not discount it for that reason.

Anyway, the moves IMO are based on their body of work. Combine last year with this year basically. DJ was really, really terrible last season , and IMO would not have made the team. So this was basically the rest of his ST audition, that he failed. You could say he was already onthe buble when he came back.

Manny, he at least had a good stretch in the 2nd half, though he pretty much has to be used in no-pressure situations. But, that is why he is still here (but also he must have a much shorter leash at this point).

FF, again they brought him in for a reason and he is getting the benefit of the doubt (and the contract) for now, but that is probably moving toward needing a change too. However, you need a replacement 1st, which means unless Terry starts trusting parnell, there is no one (short of bringing up a rookie and throwing him out there).

and why Carson? lefty, but mostly, he is on the 40 man roster. And it might be temporary, since if they do bring Young (if not mejia) back in a couple weeks, someone has to go.

I like some of those other arms (Elvin, Egbert, etc.) and think we likely do see them at some point, but for now, there are staying with the guys already on the 40 man.

      1. trs86

Carson is purely because he is on the 40 man and Byrdak’s arm may fall off. He is either pitching or warming up in every game.

As for purposely hitting Braun. To me there is no doubt about it. Doesn’t make him a bad guy. Do you think that a “good guy” can’t foul someone in basketball?

        1. kingman 26

          Agreed with every sentiment here.

Of course good guys hit batters. Hell, even religious guys do.

          1. Stick

some of the dirtiest guys in sports have also been some of the biggest religious ones.

          2. kingman 26

Some of the dirtiest guys outside of sports have also been some of the biggest “religious” ones.

          3. trs86

            Chris Carter… the football player.

          4. gategem

In prehistoric days I drilled one of my best friends (we went to different HS) and broke his left wrist. To this day every time the weather changes he calls me up and curses me out. :-)

    2. kingman 26

Oh, the team pastor said DJ is the most faithful person.

Well, no one religious has ever committed a violent act!

      LOL!

And Francisco’s still closing because he is 9 for 11 in save chances and we have no one better.

Hopefully Parnell eventually can be our closer.

      1. Mr North Jersey

Collins mentioned yesterday how he didn’t want to shuffle people around in the pen. I suspect that having a winning record is the reason why. If the team falls below .500 I would expect a lot of shuffling to begin. Parnell probably being the 1st of them.

        1. kingman 26

          I can understand that.

It’s only a matter of time before Parnell moves up the bullpen food chain, and if he again fails, we are in trouble.

    3. SaltyGary

Carrasco’s only legacy will be that he wasn’t a effective pitcher for the Mets. People will quickly forget about the Braun incident and him soon enough.

I don’t think he intentionally hit him anyway. I think he got shaken up Braun came to bat, in his mind he was thinking not to mess up and the pitch got away.

  6. Prismo

Terry Collins said Jason Bay will “absolutely” get his starting job back.

And you all mocked me for being paranoid!

    1. kingman 26

Well, we may be right still, if Ike loses HIS starting job at the same time!

Then Kirk and Duda will still play every day.

      1. Stick

No, the way this has been going, you will have Ike, bay and Torres all playing every day, and not hitting worth a lick. Kirk will be shipped back to AAA to waste away.

    2. Stick

I was on a rampage in the dugout last night that Terry cost them a shot at the win (it was on his overmanaging), and even brought out the “FIRE TERRY” signs (good thing I saved the ones from Jerry, and it was an easy change).

If he comes back and installs bay every day, including against RHP, then I am going to quit my job and make railing against Terry my full time mission.

especially if it comes at the expense of keeping Kirk, since of course, he already annointed Torres the CF, and you aren’t allowed to make changes to help the team actually, you know, win.

So, how many weeks of bay being Ike vs. RHP, with the offense bogging down even more, with more games being flushed before they finally make a move to platoon him?

      1. kingman 26

The way he used Parnell last night was really the first time I was angry at Terry.

        That was strange.

Installing Bay and sitting Kirk would be a very strange move.

        1. Stick

it almost seems that he is more interested in following his unwritten bible (traditions) vs. trying to do what makes sense to help the team win, even if it means ruffling a veteran feather on occasion.

          1. Prismo

Yes exactly. It’s like he’s following a book on how to manage, and can’t actively decide what the BEST moves would be.

Clearly leaving Parnell in made sense (and this happened in another blown bullpen game a few days ago too). But instead Terry actually decided to go through the bullpen using progressively worse and worse pitchers, just because of their “roles” or whatever.

Now he says Bay deserves the starting job over Kirk who’s playing an above average defense while hitting around .300. Why? Because Bay is the veteran and Kirk is the kid, no other reason makes “sense.”

Again, I love Terry’s motivational skills. But this in-game management is atrocious and it’s costing the team wins. Sandy should hire someone smarter to coach Terry on HOW to manage games. If Terry’s ego isn’t way above that.

          2. Prismo

Here’s something I can’t wrap my head around:

If Carrasco was ONE bad outing away from being demoted, how in god’s name was the time to use him when the game was in an extremely tight situation with runners on base?

          3. trs86

Because you give him the opportunity to do it under pressure. Him doing it in a 7-1 game wouldn’t show a damn thing.

          4. Stick

because Terry had mis-managed himself into a corner.

he basically burned parnell for the 1 batter, and didn’t want to leave the lefty in. Since Rauch had already pitched (if you can call it that?), and Ramon was burnt, he had put himself in the position of only having crap left. What were the options? DJ, Manny (just as bad) or Fat franky?

all because of his obssession with following the pecking order rules, he ended up with no one decent to bring in if the annointed 8th inning guy didn’t have it.

Of course, you could take the bold step of bringing in your closer in the 8th to slam the door, but that probably violates another of Terry’s traditional covenants. Plus of course, he stinks too.

          5. Prismo

I think I would have rather seen him have a few good outings in 7-1 games before he was put in such a crucial situation.

          6. Prismo

On a positive note I appreciated when Rauch apologized to the fans and Johan Santana on Twitter. That was classy and showed accountability.

(now just don’t do it again!)

          7. trs86

But if he stinks he stinks I guess. Having him taking up space and hoping for him to rebound while you are burning out Byrdak is not really helping anything. IMO either Acosta or DJ had to go.

          8. srt

            Agree, Prismo.
Rauch apologized to Santana, the team and the fans in his post game interview last night. Said he doesn’t know how he’s gonna look Santana in the eye after blowing that game.

          9. Stick

well, he should just do what I did.

Blame Terry for not just leaving Parnell in for the 8th.

          10. gategem

OTOH Terry may believe that the moves he makes gives the team the best chance to win over a complete season.

  7. Mr North Jersey

    Hey SRT,

“As I don’t think anyone wants to see us hogging this thread for what will be again a debate with no end in sight, let’s just agree to disagree and leave it at that.”

    Bless You :-)

    1. Mr North Jersey

Now if only TRS could realize that it’s ok to not respond to every single comment Alex or Metsie makes then maybe filtering through MMO would be more manageable.

      1. trs86

I am trying to get them to submit to the will of allah reality.

        1. Stick

no, you just like to be a smartass and stir up trouble.

          1. Mr North Jersey

            This. :-)

          2. SaltyGary

OMG what a pile of vomit that thread is. They will not bend TRS and you are morphing into the “Bizarro Metsie”. For the sake of everyone please ease up.

          3. trs86

Well that too at times but most of the time not that’s just my normal nature.

As for them not bending, who cares? I am bored. Got nothing to do. No good post to write and we comment here but that’s not enough for my boredom. Call it an addiction I will get burned out soon enough. Besides, it actually drives a little traffic too.

Today’s fun though. One is saying the Mets signing of Perez was better than Carrasco while also saying that Wright is hitting so well because the players behind him sucks.

          4. Stick

some of those guys do seem to go in circles and flip sides, depending on which agenda point they are trying to make.

Wright only hits when he can hide in the lineup morphed to he is hitting becuase there is no one else to do it/

At this point, i just skip over the metsie/whoever debates that repeat the same tired (and sometimes unintelligible) points over and over.

          5. SaltyGary

OK if you are bored, here’s a assignment then. Based on discussion in the “power” post today. Do a analysis on the pen and see if they are really that bad or if the lack of runs are putting them in a unfair position.

That has to be more fun then those circles right?

          6. Mr North Jersey

You know TRS if your only commenting due to boredom and know then you shouldn’t rag on ppl like Metsie or Alex for making everything about the same thing everyday as well.

Your basically saying you know your not adding anything relevant to the post and just arguing for argument’s sake.

          7. trs86

NJ has already done the pen thing. As for my EYES (lol) I can already tell they are that bad.

          8. trs86

I appreciate your candor, I just don’t see it the same.

          9. Mr North Jersey

Well were part of the same crew here at RDM so candor is something I felt you needed to hear. Listen to your crew for a change TRS and try easing up. No one is telling you to go cold turkey but it’s like lately your on a mission to reply to just about every single comment over at MMO that Alex & Metsie make.

          10. SaltyGary

The way I’ve been looking at it is you are part of the the name brand of this site that we love. We all love the site and love you ( in a non-homosexual way of course. Except for SRT :) ) But you keep getting into these crazy circles with those guys, and it poorly reflects on you which in turn poorly reflects on the site. I think it’s fine to debate and have a difference of opinion with them once in a while, but it’s been this whole different thing that is going on there and it makes those threads un-readable and people are just turned off by it.

          11. trs86

I will take it into consideration. Now I gotta get back to the fire :( )

          12. Prismo

“We all love the site and love you (in a non-homosexual way of course. Except for SRT)”

Gary, you love 4D in a homosexual way? o_O

        2. srt

I’ll give you credit, TRS. Some of those comments from Metsie are so off the wall, I’m not sure I’d have the ambition to type back anything but ‘WHAT????’

          1. Stick

he always makes me feel like the AFLAC duck in the commercial that had Yogi in it.

          2. Mr North Jersey

Yea some of the replies are of the “What?” variety.

    2. srt

      LOL.
I can’t get into a debate with Metsie which would equate to beating a dead horse that has been beat so many times. He’s like a dog with a bone that just won’t let go. :-)

  8. SaltyGary

Speaking on MMO I just saw in the Shout Box that Joe D is out of the ICU and is stabilizing but has a long way to go. That seems like good news.

    1. Mr North Jersey

Yea saw that as well Gary. I sent him an email wishing he gets well soon. Hopefully the worst is over for him and he can get back home to his family.

    2. srt

That is somewhat good news as I would think that hopefully points to his condition no longer being ‘grave’.

Sincerely hope he gets back on his feet soon.

    3. Prismo

Geez, what happened to him? I totally missed this. He’s a young guy, right?

      1. SaltyGary

I don’t know if he is really that young… Sounds like he is having heart issues.
