The Sunday Question

Let me first express my best wishes to a great website.  Happy Birthday to the Real Dirty Mets Blog.

Today’s two questions refers to our Third Baseman.  Do you want Sandy Alderson to sign David Wright?  Here’s another question, do you think Wright will refuse the contract offer and test the free agent market?

I was reluctant (actually against it) before the season started, not knowing what DW you were going to get. But now, I say go for it. Though of course, it comes down to the terms (length maybe more so than $/year)

and I think he would sign a realistic deal (and what that is can debated for a long time!). But unlike Reyes, who by the last season was 100% going FA and chasing the $, I think Wright would like to sign a deal soon.

a couple of reasons. 1 is that he just might be that rare guy that wants to stay where he is. 2nd is it would avoid the circus for the next 1.5 years (and eliminate the chance of being traded somewhere objectionable). 3rd is IMO a biggie. It puts all the injury risk back on the Mets. If he hurts his back say, instead of blowing his big contract opportunity, he can rest indefinitely o nthe met’s dime

you didn’t ask, but what is fair that the Mets would likely do, that he could take? Zimmerman money, but maybe 1 year less? Reyes money plus a little bonus?

For discussion, what if the offer (mets all in) is 5/100 on top of the option year (so 6/116 total), meaning he is here for 6 season past this one, up until about age 35/36.

I think the Mets will do that and really, how much more will he get after the 2013 season at age 30 (31?)

I want the Mets to re-sign David Wright – they need a veteran leader. But if I were Wright, even though I might like to finish my career with the Mets, I’d have to think hard about whether they would be able to give me a chance to win a championship.

you are talking about 5-6 years at least. a ton can change in that time, so the Mets have just about as good a chance of winning a championship.

unless you are playing the “yankee” card, and heck, they only have 1 WS ring in the last decade. The Phils? they had their once in a century run of dominance, but once it ends, who knows when another one starts? And they too only have 1 WS ring in that time.

Do you measure success and failure by whether a team wins a WC?

    Yes to the first question.
Hopefully not to the second question. All depends on how serious the Mets will be if they decide to resign him. If they insult him by not offering what he’s worth, I won’t be blaming him if he takes his talents elsewhere.

I was in the camp of trade DWright but leaning on the old wisdom of Grave and his “trading stars for prospects” piece, I am in the mindset of extend Wright and do it this season. DWright is special, the face of the team and means more than Reyes did, so I think the offer will be fair and he’ll stay.

Now, had Ike not completely sucked thus far and Duda lived up to Stick’s expectations and Murphy actually hit for power… then you could have traded DWright as there would be cavalry to come to our rescue. Then again, had they all done that, this team would be ripping it up and we would be discussing play off runs and can this be a team of destiny, etc. etc.

On another topic, Gaby Sanchez was sent down. He has been better than Ike. Just sayin…

      Barely. LOL. 46 OPS+ compared to Ike’s 45.

Thus proving my point that Ike should be demoted.

I don’t like the thought of giving someone $100M based on about 7 weeks of a resurgence. Wait until the season is over and assess the situation and let the talks begin. He’s got a 219 OPS+ right now, I don’t want to start coming up with contract numbers in the middle of that kind of crazy hot streak.

True but does it hurt to ask or begin negotiations? Hell if they see there is no shot it might even lead to trading him this season with his value maybe at it’s highest…. I sure hope not though.

Even with the Madoff investment scandal behind them and their financial problems for the near term predictable (it’s hard to look long term with the economic conditions in Europe and the presidential election hanging like a cloud over the economy) the Mets may not be able to offer Wright the contract he seeks. So I have no idea what will transpire nor will I venture an opinion.
