Last Night on the Farm – 5/21/12

The Mets apparently don’t like Mondays, as the entire organization tanked last night, going 0-5.  But there’s a few silver linings, let’s try to find them:

Indianapolis 8, Buffalo 6

The Bisons erased a 3-run deficit in the late innings, but Josh Edgin let up 2 unearned runs on 1 hit in the 9th, leading to the Herd’s demise.  Before that Elvin Ramirez struck out 2 in 2 perfect innings.  He has yet to give up a run in 9 innings at AAA.  If the Mets don’t want to wait for Jenrry Mejia, Ramirez appears to be the guy that could replace Manny Acosta.  At the plate, Corey Wimberly, Fred Lewis, and Josh Satin all had 2 hits each.  Omar Quintanilla hit his 6th homer of the year.  Jordany Valdespin didn’t start but he came in the game and had 2 at bats, striking out both times up.

New Britain 10, Binghamton 7

Mark Cohoon had a rough night, giving up 7 runs (5 earned) in 4.2 innings.  Armando Rodriguez wasn’t much better, giving up 3 runs on 7 hits in 3.1 innings, although he did strike out 3 and walk none.  Matt Den Dekker was 1 for 4 with a double, extending his hit streak to 16.  Raul Reyes was 4 for 5 with a homerun.  Josh Rodriguez was a homer shy of the cycle.  Reese Havens was 0 for 3 with 2 walks and an RBI.

Daytona 4, St. Lucie 3

You know it’s a bad night when St. Lucie loses, just their 10th of the year.  Adam Kolarek got a chance to close, but after pitching a scoreless 8th inning he couldn’t finish off the Cubs in the 9th, being charged with 3 runs.  Before that things were great for the Lucies: Erik Goeddel showed signs of his former self striking out 7 and walking 1 while pitching 5 scoreless innings.  Pedro Beato followed for an inning, giving up 1 hit but striking out 2.  At the plate the Lucies managed just 3 hits.  Alonzo Harris and Blake Forsythe each had a double.  Wilmer Flores hit his 7th homer of the year.

Charleston 5, Savannah 3

Jacob DeGrom was good again, letting up 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits through 5.2 innings, while walking 1 and striking out 6.  Jeffrey Walters struck out 4 in 2 innings of work, but he also gave up his first 2 earned runs of the year, taking the loss.  The Gnats had 6 hits in the game from 6 different players.  Dustin Lawley doubled for the only extra-base hit of the game.  Savannah struck out 14 times while facing 5 different pitchers.

Is Elvin Ramirez on the 40 man roster? I’m thinking no…
If they do DFA Manny – even if he winds up back in the minors – he won’t be on the 40 man, right? So that would free up a space for Elvin, should they decide to call him up.

Only know what I’m reading here in your thorough tracking of minor league games, but it appears Reese Havens is off to a slow start. Was curious to see what this kid would bring to the table, now that he finally appears healthy. Plenty of time left yet, I suppose.

No, Elvin is not on the 40, and since I doubt Manny has options he would have to be DFA, but there’s no guarantee he doesn’t get claimed or accepts a minor league placement.

Havens has never struggled like this in his life. He’s been back for about 3 weeks, so if he doesn’t snap out of it soon, it might be time to get concerned.

hopefully it is just a matter of havens needing to get his timing back. Hard to see why he suddenly would have lost all ability to hit!

if this goes on for another 2 months, then I will start to worry.

Wait…..Pedro Beato pitched? I thought he was on the 60 day DL? His pitching must be part of his rehab….

Even guys on the 60 day DL can make rehab appearances. So far so good. I believe he’s eligible to come off the DL on the 27th, so it;ll be interesting to see what happens. I’m sure if he were healthy coming out of spring the team would have preferred he go to AAA and develop, which is still probably what’s best considering he was rushed to the big leagues b/c of rule 5, but there’s definitely a need now to replace Acosta and no other candidates besides Beato and Elvin, unless you wait a couple more weeks for Mejia.

Going to be interesting to see what they do with the 40 man, to potentially make some moves in the upcoming weeks.

yeah, they are running out of painless moves (like shifting guys to the 60 day DL). So expect to see some DFAs. Acosta, an easy one if they are calling up a RP. Satin i guess could be a casualty. beyond that, not so easy. Schwinden? Lutz? Some random guy at AAA that you don’t realize is even on the 40 man?

Actually, seeing a current 40 man list would be helpful.

but my guess is Satin and Acosta are the next 2 guys lopped off.

          1. Bryan

No more AAA randoms beyond Satin and Lutz. Part of the problem is the 40 is jammed up with youngsters like Lagares, Flores, Puello, and Havens. But Acosta and Satin are definitely the next to go, and hopefully Schwinden after that. Also, at what point does Torres become a consideration. His OBP is high and his defense good, but his average is below .200.

Torres is really stinking it up at the plate so far this year.
I’ll bet he gets a little more leeway though – because of what we saw in the field last night with Kirk and Baxter. Actually, that’s about the 2nd or 3rd time I’ve seen Kirk bulldoze plays in CF this season.

Now…..last night appeared to be on Baxter all the way. However, I’m not sure Kirk has the mentality right now to be that lead in the OF the CF needs to be. I’m willing to bet that Torres isn’t going anywhere until at least Bay gets back. With Duda in RF, they just cannot afford to have an OF of all rookies or near rookies.

I blame Kingman for all this. He takes a night off, and tanks the entire organization.

      At least the Devils won.
