The Mets defeated the Pirates today by a score of 3-1.
This game started off quite nicely for the Amazins’ as they would get a first inning run off of Charlie Morton in the form of a Lucas Duda single. They would add two more runs on an RBI double from David Wright and a sacrifice-fly by Captain Kirk.
Jon Niese was quite good today only allowing one run pitching 7 2/3 and striking out five, it certainly was a bit of a rebound for him. He was able to work mostly without the curve-ball today, throwing only five according to BrooksBaseball.net.
Sorry for the tardy/abbreviated recap, but I just wanted to get it out somewhere near the end of the game. Here are some points of discussion:
- Do you buy into this team being “resilient?”
- Did you like the outfield changes TC made in the ninth inning?
- Did Ike look any better today? I’m actually asking because I didn’t see the game.
- Is using bullet points a lazy way to make this post seem longer?
- I don’t think so.
The Mets will play San Diego at Citi Field tomorrow at 7:10.

Good, fast win today. Took 2 work calls and missed most of the scoring on either side. By the time I could take a look, FranFran was out there. Gotta win these types of series against the weaker teams, so good job there.

same here as in OK. had some calls, and noticed the game flying by when I could check. Only gameday peeks, no visual.
Do you buy into this team being “resilient?” – YES
Did you like the outfield changes TC made in the ninth inning? – NO CLUE WHAT THEY WERE
Did Ike look any better today? I’m actually asking because I didn’t see the game. – HIGHLY DOUBT IT
Is using bullet points a lazy way to make this post seem longer? _NO

I watched this entire game. Nice win.
Niese was outstanding. Unlike his Toronto start, he obviously had a plan and executed it.
Mets offense is still too light but they got the job done today.

Yes.

Yes. Duda is still an adventure out there and why take the chance? They were ahead 2 runs. Not like it was tied and you wanted to keep Duda’s bat in there.
- Did Ike look any better today? I’m actually asking because I didn’t see the game.
Somewhat. Got a hard hit single. Lifted a ball to the warning track. Still guessing at pitches as evidenced on a swing and striking out – even though the damn pitch was so low it hit him in the foot.

LOL. Fine with me if it touches on the high points.

Do you buy into this team being “resilient?” – Yes, they like to bounce back from cruddy series. However, I wish they didn’t have to be so resilient in the midst of a single game (could use more blow-out wins).
Did you like the outfield changes TC made in the ninth inning? – Yes, Duda basically got replaced with Torres, right? That’s an upgrade.
Did Ike look any better today? I’m actually asking because I didn’t see the game. He had a hard hit single and hit another ball well that was caught deep in the outfield. But we’ve seen this before, several times actually…let’s see him hit well for several games in a row before making any grand statements.
Is using bullet points a lazy way to make this post seem longer? I love bullet points.

Would like to add some high points:
-Just when you think Wright’s hitting a slump, he knocks an RBI double.
-Frank Frank has now looked on-target 3 games in a row. Thank god.
-The Mets are 3 full games ahead of the last place Phillies, whose fans are talking about how Halladay and Lee are on the decline and the Phillies are “done”
-Parnell struck out the Pirates’ best hitter in McCutchen in an extremely high pressure situation in the 8th inning. He deserves a ton of credit for that.
-Jon Niese stopped his bleeding and pitched an excellend game.

I hate the phillies. and am seriously enjoying hearing their fans (remember, I live in the heart of Philly land) all in a panic. Plus, the booing is getting fierce out at CBP.
Halladay really has not looked like Halladay lately. would not surprise me at all if he is pitching though something they haven’t confessed to yet. Lee has been up and down a little, but already missed time with an injury.
I won’t believe they are done until I see the post mortum, but the old gray mare just ain’t what it used to be!

You see to be inferring that you hate the Phillies but perhaps I’m misreading your sentiments. For all we know you may be a closet Phillies fan.

Triple-F, Niese and Parnel all performed well today. Lately I’ve been critical of Dan Warthen but perhaps I’ve been to harsh. OTOH the Pirates are offensively challenged to put it mildly. They are what the Mets could be if they approached hitting the way the Pirates do. Most of the Pirates hitters seem clueless.

listened except for the first two innings.
Up until the last AB and the error I thought Ike had an okay showing. deep fly out and a hard hit single. That’s fine if that was his slump level, but so far this year 1/4 with some hard hit outs has been his ceiling. I dunno.
Defensive replacements are good. Duda’s looked marginally better, mostly with throwing, but you might as well make the defensive change.
Wright is awesome.
I know there is some worry that Nieuwenhuis will get less playing time when Bay comes back, but I doubt it. Terry seems to sit him some against lefties anyway, and he’s already shown this week he doesn’t mind sitting Torres for Kirk against righties so plenty of playing time for 4 guys at least through the 6/14 games when you’ll have the extra 6 DH games. If an outfielder needs to be worried, it might be Hairston.

Rough road trip. Yes they split 3-3 and considering they are playing with a lineup that has Nickeas, Cedeno a struggling Torres and a player mired in a season long slump in Davis. I will take that and run.
These Mets say what you will about their faults continue to scratch and claw to find ways to win so far this 2012 season. Props to Niese on a much needed solid performance vs a Bucs team that is struggling with the bat just as bad as we are.
Thole, Tejada and Jason Bay will soon be back and decisions will soon have to be made on Ike going down or not and who plays 1st base in the meantime plus who will be the starting outfielders once Bay returns. Hopefully all the decisions pay off and are good ones.
Positives was Niese giving the team a much needed solid performance followed by Parnell and Francisco doing the same.
It will be good to get back home and hopefully healthy during this home stand.

Change of subject:
Zach Wheeler lowered his ERA to 1.97 with an 8 inning 2 hit performance with 6 strikeouts. Just about ready for AAA.
They kids are coming, watch out MLB it’ll be sooner than you think.

pretty good numbers. I’m still surprised that some posters still feel the need to run him down, and belittle the trade of Beltran, just because they abhor Sandy and refuse to ever admit he did something positive.
I agree that he appears about ready for AAA, but thankfully, for a change there is a bit of a log jam of actual talent there.

You bring back memories. When Wes Westrum managed the Mets he desperately wanted to keep his job because he was aware of the kids on the farm. Back in 1983 Doc Gooden was promoted from Lynchburg a class a+ league directly to the International League playoffs. That game was televised and once I saw him I thought that right now he was better than any pitcher on the big league staff.
