BrianCostaWSJ “Ike Davis said Collins told him he will NOT be demoted to minors. Mets will let him work out his issues in the majors”

A move which I’m totally fine with. This is the season to work these things out anyway.

nope. disagree. The mets have overcome a lot and are still in the mix, so they need to keep pushing forward. Not of course meaning trade all their prospects for a bandaid, but not punt on a chance to win to let a (relative) rookie try to fix his mess in the majors.
Ike can go to AAA and try to correct his problems, like any other 25 YO 2nd year player that is a complete mess and a drag on his team. Won’t kill him, and the mets could benefit.
by that logic, just call up harvey right now, and let him finish developing in the majors, since it doesn’t matter if they win or not.

Who’s going to play first? Lutz?
I don’t really trust Duda at first base, Ike has to scoop a bad throw or two from Wright and Murphy on a nightly basis.
Sorry, I still view this as a 100% building year, and without another true 1B to take over in Ike’s absense we can use his great defense while waiting for the hitting to come through.

I’d say the drop in D by having Duda at 1B is nothing compared to the black hole of a batter that Ike is at the moment.

Torres is hitting .187 and he barely has more of a career than Ike. Why aren’t people begging for him to be out of the lineup?

hopefully that is just how Ike interpreted it. and that it is more of a “at this moment” not a “no matter how long and how bad you continue to stink” deal!

yeah, this was pretty much “Relax man, every AB is not going to make or break your status on the team tomorrow.” thing.

That’s quite the 6-7-8 tonight…not that it’s usually much better.

Yuck. Torres is really in my doghouse. Would not miss him at all if he went away.

I’m with you. Murph in the 2 hole is where he belongs. Now, if we just had Jose or Rickey or Tim Raines leading off…

I commented this on MMO but I wanted to share it here as well.
The quotes I’m reading so far being attributed to Ike are of a player that admits the rather loud whispers about him eventually going down has to some extent gotten in his head.
In retrospect Collins public remarks about the discussions of wringing the rag dry before deciding if sending Ike down may have only made things worse for Ike. Of course I admit this is highly speculative on my part.
I have to wonder if internally this was also seen as having an adverse effect on him hence the statements of Ike saying that they had a meeting and they are sticking with him through this and support that he can turn it around.
Some of the quotes from Ike so far are:
“I’m going to be here for an extended period of time to get my (swing) back) and playing better,’’ Davis said. “Obviously they have confidence in me, they’re backing me and they know I’m going to get through this. So I’m going to be here for awhile, and it’s just up to me to start playing better.’’
“It helped, because now I don’t have to talk about going down every day with you guys, so that’s nice,’’ Davis said. “Obviously you think about it. When we answer questions, it’s not like what you guys say goes in one ear and out the other; I have to think about it, so obviously I thought about it more. It’s just nice to get that out of the way, that if I go 0-for-4 tomorrow I’m not going to get sent down.’’

Interesting……if I look at this post on my laptop, I see both line-ups. If I look at it on my tablet, which is loading the mobile version, I’m only seeing the Padres line up.
On Ike – it’s got to be hard answering the same questions every day about being sent down, are they going to do it, when are they going to do it…..
I think many forget how young Ike is. He’s not an established star or even MLB starter. He doesn’t even have one season from April to Sep under his belt. Think many fans just took it for granted he was going to hit the ground running this season and hit in the top tier of first base men in the NL. When it didn’t happen in April and so far this May, the pressure just mounted.
If they do leave him up here to figure it out – and he doesn’t, it,s all on him. Either because he won’t listen, or can’t figure it out….or just isn’t that very good first baseman all thought he was going to be.
My money is on he’s better than what we’re seeing. How much better, I have no idea. I won’t be surprised though if this drags out a good long time.

there is actually a big risk of keeping him up and eliminating the AAA option.
If it doesn’t work, then what? You pretty much have to write the guy off at that point. Certainly can’t pencil him in for a job next year, so for all intents you don’t have a 1B and need to find another one.
so then he is relegated to the minors, since he no longer even has a position, or they end up having to dump him for nothing.
at least if you do it now, you have a reasonable shot at him getting his shat together, and coming back to prove that he can be counted on as a returning player.
I am starting to think they are going to back this into a corner that Ike isn’t coming out of.

About a month ago I was all about sending Ike down and I’ve actually changed my mind the past 2 weeks. I really don’t want to lose his glove at first. We’ve got David playing his best third base in years and I just don’t want him having to think about his throws with a different guy consistantly on the receiving end if Ike’s in Buffalo. Ike is a great big security blanket on the receiving end for all the infielders including the Catcher when they have to throw down to first after all those Dickey knucklers they miss catching for strike 3, there were like 3 of those RA’s last start. One he calmly stepped into foul territory to stretch and pick the throw out from Nickeas. Ike will break out soon, he has too. They’re 4 over .500 and he’s barely done anything, they can keep him up at least awhile longer. I think he’ll start breaking out by the end of this homestand and then we can stop the hysteria in what is a rebuilding year.
