The Mets finished out the series with the Padres today with a 2-0 win while bringing their streak to 26 consecutive shutout innings. While there wasn’t much offense today for the Mets they did manage to provide Dickey with an early 1-0 lead in the first inning with another 2 out RBI. This one from Murphy driving in Wright who is actually struggling a little at the plate but still managing to draw a few walks.
That one run would prove to be all the Mets needed as Dickey would match his 11 strike out performance with a 10 spot today. The Mets did provide an insurance run from a couple of wild pitch, passed balls to make the score 2-0. Dickey cruised until the 8th inning and barely nicked (if at all) Nick Hundley, the first batter of the inning. He rebouned to strike out Blake Tekotte but walked Chris Denorfia to put the tying run on base. With a LH pinch hitter brought in the Mets turned to Perpetual Byrdak to do what he does, get the LH out and today was no different as he retired the next two to get out of the inning. Brydak continues to impress since his incredible impersonation of the Hulkster.
Frank Francisco continued to be dialed in and finished off the 9th 1, 2, 3. Since May 14th Frank has lowered his ERA from 8.59 to 6.75 while converting his 13th save in 15 chances.
Also, with the win Dickey moves to 7-1 to tie for the NL lead in wins.
Tomorrow, the Mets start a big series with the Phillies in a Memorial Day match-up beginning at 1:00.

‘Who’s Your Padre’ Very clever….
What more can anyone possibly say about RA Dickey?
The more he throws that knuckle ball, the better he appears to get with that pitch. Not sure about this start, but he only threw 5 FBs in his last start. Don’t really need it I guess when you’re striking out 11.
Byrdak is starting to look like the best signing of the off season. I have no idea how he’s doing this but he’s just been money in the bank, for the most part.
Francisco has looked good of late – crossing my fingers on that.
Offense didn’t do much today but didn’t need to. Should have given Wright a day off this series. Think we’ll need the offense to heat up a bit this next month coming up. Right now, most of these teams coming up are all over .500.

Was at today’s tilt against the Pods and RA was excellent. I couldn’t believe we couldn’t get to Volquez(sp?) considering his early pitch count. The Kirk catch was huge, especially given the next guy doubled. Then to try to steal third with one out was just clueless. He was safe but the throw beat him but I’ll gladly take the out call. Ike looked lost again today, David looks like he’s finally cooling off some unfortunately, and Duda oh so close to the big fly to straight away center. Francisco got it done but I fully expected a high wire act with only the 2 run lead. Was so glad it didn’t turn out as such.

I didn’t see the game so TRS thank you for the recap.
The Padres are a dreadful team. Clueless, undisciplined, defensively and offensively challenged. The have some fine young arms on the mound but it must be depressing pitching for this squad.
Now the Mets schedule becomes difficult and will test the mettle of this team. If the Mets do well it will be interesting to see the FO response. Do they trade for the missing pieces? Do they stick to the rebuilding plan and sit tight? OTOH the finances of the club may determine the direction regardless of the success on the field.

If they hang in the race though the tough part of June, I think they will go after help (if of course what they need is something you can get). No, I don’t expect them to trade one of the top few guys (harvey, wheeler), but they do have quite a large volume of upper level guys at this point, and they won’t be able to keep them all at year end anyway.
It will be interesting to see of course.
even if they just break even (.500 or very close to it) though interleague, they will definitely be still in it for the 2nd half.
what could sway the decision of course is another slew of key injuries. hopefully is out of the way.
Now, what will really energize the fanbase is come early July, be over .500, sign wright to an extension, and trade for someone that really looks like he will help for the stretch run. Do that, and avoid going into a tailspin of losing, and they recoup the money spent on attendance.

team looking good now. good thing, since you have to pile up wins vs. the softies, and that has not been something this team has been known for recently.
now please, please, please win the series vs. the G-D Phils.
in case anyone is not aware, I hate the phillies.

Ditto on this.
Beating up especially on Hamels would make my day.

I have asked this before but whatcha trading for? What if Young comes back… do you need Sp? What about the pen? It may have Mejia. The offense should have Ruben and Thole back so who are you replacing for more offense. I still think this team has both potential and flaws but this year is the year to find those things out.

that’s why I said if they can get what they need. And it may be a case of an upgrade to something not filling a missing part. Maybe a better RP (like when Mill got KRod? or a “real” SP to pump up the rotation and the pen?
